Opening night of hockey season is tinged with a hint of sadness. It has been reported that Barry Melrose has retired from ESPN following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
His no-nonsense analysis was surpassed only with his knowledge of the game. He was a former player and coach, and was one heck of a hockey analyst, at least to me.
The thing I most admired about Melrose was his respect for the game of hockey. He came close to winning the Stanley Cup when he coached the Wayne Gretzky led LA Kings to the 1993 Staney Cup final eventually falling to the Montreal Canadiens. He so revered the Cup, he held the belief that not winning it, he was not even worthy to be near it. When ESPN covered the Cup finals with the Cup on site, he would report from the other side of the studio.
Sad day, the hockey season won't be the same without your reporting, you will be missed.
