Unable to get into chat room

Myr, I'm having the same problem several other people are having also. When I try to get into the chat room, it flashes up for maybe a second, then disappears. I have the latest MSIE and Firefox and the latest Java from www.java.com. I've swept my computer for viruses and it seems to work perfectly for all applications except the TMF chat room.

Any advice? We appreciate all you do for us! 🙂

Two people now have said that either downloading the Opera browser and using that fixed the problem OR that uninstalling Java, downloading and installing Opera, and then reinstalling Java fixes the issue.

The number of people with this issue begins to concern me. Digichat must've done something.
 
Okay using the Control Panel Add/Remove programs I removed "Java Runtime environment..." from my system. (I just upgraded the other day come to think of it.) And on a lark I fired up MSIE and tried to get into the chat room just to see what would happen without Java at all. And UNBELIVABLY it came right up! I couldn't believe it! But seeing is believing...!

Now just as I'm typing this message I see a message down in my system tray that says that a "Java Update is Available." Hmmm... Do I dare? Don't fix what ain't broke Mike! Hmmm... but nevertheless I think we may be learning something here. Maybe it's the latest update that is causing the problem. So I'm gonna do it and I'll let you know what happens...

Stand by a few minutes...

Bingo! Bulls Eye! I'm learning something... When I deleted Java the last time, I only deleted Runtime Environment 6, update 1, not even seeing Runtime Environment 5.0 (and several updates) that remained installed. That's why the chat room came up. Duh!

So I did the Java suggested update to RE 6, update 1, and sure enough the chat room did NOT come up. Same problem as before. So I deleted the RE 6 again, and everything began working again! Hooray!

Bottom line is the RE 6 and the TMF chat room is somehow not compatible, at least using MSIE. I didn't check it out with Firefox but I suspect that I'd get the same results.

Moral to the story is to NOT upgrade to Java RE 6 until someone on the TMF end makes the chatroom capatible with it.

Live and learn...! (I'll send you my bill... 🙂 )

I had the same problem. I had uninstalled java for some reason, and when I went to reinstall the latest version, the same thing was happening.


I just downloaded JRE 5.0 and that fixed the problem.

If you go to this site http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp , the third one down is the one you want to download.

Yeah mine went KAPUT again using Opera, so I uninstalled version 6, and downloaded version 5 that Gigs had in the thread...and POOF!! Like magic my Firefox browser is working with Java again.

I can't get into chat. 🙁

I think my computer automatically updated something or other, but I have no idea how to undo it or fix it. 🙁
 
I think the chatroom is down, Sharon. Many people cant get in. It may be a general chatroom problem.

Question

Just a quick question on this, is there going to be an update that makes the new java compatible with TMF chat or is reverting to the older version the only way we'll ever get in chat again?

I was actually going to log in after a really long hiatus and after experiencing this, thought that maybe I was banned for previous tomfoolery...not that I condone tomfoolery of any kind.
 
Right now using the old version seems to be the 'fix'. Chat people say they plan an update 'at some future time'
