*Mods, if this ain't in the right place, ya know what to do...*

The P&R forum gets a little crazy. so, to help bring down flared tempers a bit, i decided to throw this at everyone. it's a wiki of the Bible as translated into lolcat, a whole 'nother subculture of net language that is reaching epic levels of popularity.

First of all, that is hilarious reading! But I can understand how conservative Christians might take this as literal and disrespectful. To me, this is just a goof. Is is intended to be taken seriously?

Oh no... XD I'm not entirely surprised someone did this, but that's just PAINFUL. A lolcat picture or two is cute and funny at any given time, but trying to read more than a sentence in that... sort of spelling.. just makes my eyes bleed.

Yeah, ow. And do not want.

Still funny though.

Though I agree that to bring down flared tempers is a thoughtful motive, posting something like this is quite likely to achieve the opposite. I'm thinking a little better judgement is called for, here.

what happened to your post count, drew?? you have a n00b status all of a sudden...

what's funny is that there are some people that have a loud voice in Christian society that have no problem with the lolcat Bible, and have actually enjoyed it and the idea of it.

That would appear to be drew7O, with an "O" (Oh) instead of a "0" (Zero) after the "7". Note the registration date. From my magical mod methods I can determine, however, that it is drew70 posting as drew7O. drew70 vs drew7O. I'm confused. And vacating the thread at risk of hijacking it. *Flees*

Ahhhhh, thank you for clarifying HDS. We must be blonde today.

*runs away for hijacking*

I think it's a great idea. What difference does it make what language, or ebonic nonsense it's translated into? Half of the people reading that can't understand the King James language anyway. :woot:

Yes, it was me. I thought I'd try it out and see if anybody noticed...you know, like a new hair cut. Kudos to Cloudgazer for the sharp eyes, and of course it will be a cold day in hell before anybody pulls the wool over HDS's.

None, if your goal is to piss a number of people off by dissing the one Book they hold as THE most sacred, or if the rampant plague of illiteracy sweeping the country doesn't bother you.

Half of the people posting can't make a complete sentence anyway. :woot: Thank you for demonstrating the importance of preserving the English language better than anything I could say. It may surprise you to know that there are other, more modern and arguably more accurate Bible translations than the King James. There's the New American Standard Version, the New International Version, the Amplified Bible, and of course some pretty decent paraphrases such as The Living Bible, all of which render the ancient texts into clear, plain English as it's spoken correctly today.

eh, what's the harm with having a little fun? my mother used to tell me "Don't butcher the language until you've mastered it.". many of those who have contributed to the lolcat Bible are literary geniuses. none of the lolcat Bible was done to hurt or anger; it's all in good fun.

I think pissing people off who hold the bible to be the most sacred book is always a good thing, and I’ll tell you why. It’s always important for objective ideas to challenge the alleged sacrosanctity of anything held as such. It’s one very important way for mankind to grow.

Regarding the illiteracy problem in this country, I couldn't agree more. I see it everywhere. However, disallowing people to translate the bible into any language, real or imagined, is not going to solve the problem. Hell, I can't believe the bible hasn't been translated to Klingon yet. (maybe it has! :scared: ) And, I say again...who cares?

Preserving the English language the way you know it to be is literally an impossible task, Drew. Over the last 1600 + years, the English language has been constantly mutating and evolving. Even today, right before our eyes and ears, English is changing its shape and meaning with interchangeable words, definitions, and spellings. Just over the last 50 years, English slang has added new words, and dropped others almost every 5 years. So, I don’t think you or I are going to have too much success trying to “preserve the English language.”

This certainly does more to bolster my point, than it does to rebut it. So, your position is that it’s okay for some to translate, transliterate, and arguably transmogrify the very wording of the bible, but it’s not okay for others.

Sounds like a pretty narrow view of the world to me.

Language evolves. Efficient communication, by whatever means, is most important. So long as the message is conveyed - does grammar matter?

Actually, yes. Grammar does matter. It is the cornerstone to "efficient communication" in the written language. Words and grammatical context convey meaning, emotion, intent, inspiration, and desire.

it's nice when i post a thread about something neat and humorous, and it becomes a debate over the declination of the English language.

i love it.

I see little to no potential for growth by deliberate alienation of whatever group you are trying reach. It's counterproductive, and more than a little stupid. There are far more effective and receptive means by which to challenge such things, assuming that such challenges are even necessary for growth.

Most of those who hold The Bible as sacred aren't at all opposed to translating the Bible into other languages. In fact, this has been an ongoing effort for centuries. The ancient texts were all written in Hebrew and Greek, so it would make little sense to object to translation.

Translation is one thing. Bastardization is quite another. What you are supporting and condoning is the glorification of ignorance, illiteracy, and stupidity.

Again, we're talking about two different things. Yes, languages such as ours do evolve. Words become archaic and new words need to be added. When I speak of preserving the English language, I'm not talking about halting the natural growth and evolution of it. I'm talking about halting its decay and devolvement into utter gibberish. Moreover, I never said nor implied that this bastardization should be disallowed. I think it should be allowed so that it can be properly ridiculed and made an example of.

Yes, as incredible as it sounds, I actually believe translating the Bible into other languages is best left to the most highly educated linguists and eschatologists, not grade school dropouts.

Think of it rather as "focused" than "narrow."

Just when I thought the Bible was all BS, this showed up.

I haz christian in meez after all, lyksriosly. :bubble:

your soapbox broken yet, drew? 'cuz i think you ruined everyone's fun plenty of times lately.
