TMF gender breakdown ...

I am currently looking into a few numbers and statistics regarding membership of this forum, and I wondered if anyone could help me in trying to establish the percentage split of males and females.

I am particularly interested to hear if there is an easy way of achieving this using a search filter, or if any of the Mods out there has access to such information.

In the absence of an exact figure however, I would appreciate everyone's approximations, based on their own experience and knowledge of the community.

At a guess I'd say 70/30 spilt. Ish.

I think some members are keeping quiet about their gender anyway. I don't think you could conduct this investigation accurately.

Good point, Getty. This project may not workout to well. Even though a lot of the women here have become a lot less shy about taking part in the forums they're still very careful and very wary of some of the guys around here and lurkers sure don't want to be discovered so, don't expect people to just jump right into this.

According to http://www.quantcast.com it's 85/15 split in the direction you would expect.

Good stuff so far guys. I have never come across Quantcast.com before - it's the closest thing I've got to a semi-reliable answer for now though.

You are all right in pointing out the difficulty in reaching an accurate figure due to people's reluctuance to reveal such things about themselves - but that is part of the reason for putting the question out there in the first place to see if it's possible to establish some sort of consensus on the approximate split.

Keep the ideas and estimates coming ...

Well I have to admit, it hasn't been quite the flood of responses I was hoping for, but nevertheless it has provided at least some support to my own theory that the split between males and females within the TMF is somewhere between 70/30 and 90/10.

Special thanks must go to DRC for the link to Quantcast.com and the 85/15 percent result it produced. This is the figure I shall be using.

But using for what I hear you all ask ...

Basically, being a UK based TMF member, I often ponder that age-old question of just 'Where are all the female UK TMFers?'

And rather than take the usual route of posting a desperate sounding personal assuring all the lovely British ladies what a nice gentleman I am, and that I promise not to kidnap them if they reply - I thought I would take a straightforward statistical approach to simply see if they actually exist!

So, here's the idea - and yes - UK based ladies - please start reading now ...

As of the 9th Feb this year, I collected the following statistics:

Worldwide membership of the TMF: 93,104
Population of the world : 6,801,600,000
Population of the U.K. : 61,383,000

A quick (and very basic calculation) using these figures reveals that the UK based membership of the TMF is around 840 people. Now factor in the 85/15 gender split, and we arrive at my magic (And probably wildly inaccurate!) number: 126!

That's right - I believe there should be (very) approximately 126 ladies out there who are from the UK, and members of this community.

So here's what I'd like to do ...

If you are reading this, and you live in the U.K., and you are female - then please respond to my little survey in one of three ways:

1) Post a reply to this thread. (For the bold souls!)
2) Send me a Private Message via the TMF.
3) Drop me an email at [email protected]

In the case of 2 or 3, I give you my 100% assurance that NONE of your details will be revealed to anyone, nor will I use them to pester you in any way subsequently. It doesn't matter whether you are a 'ler, a 'lee or both, and no more detail is required other than a simple acknowledgement that you are 'out there somewhere'!

You are of course right. There are a lot of possible flaws in my calculations, not least of which is that many people may have had several member names over the years which as you point out are now inactive.

Hopefully though, this thread simply asks that any ladies who are currently active in the forum (Active meaning just viewing it even), to acknowledge that they're actually out there!

Does that work out that in *roughly* every 487166 women I meet in the uk, one of them will be a member of the TMF? 😛
Apparently there are 2.5million people living in Greater Manchester. That means there are 5 tmf members here.
Somehow I dont think I'm gonna bump into them in the street tomorrow. But you never know. Its not impossible, just very improbable.

i see that no one estimated that women far outnumber men in this forum. Ha! What a shock! Okay, then, now that we have established that women are in the minority here, i will request that we all try our best to behave nicely in order to retain those women who are members. i will try.
