Today has been the day from hell with my computer! I got up this morning, and saw that I needed to update my Norton Anti Virus protection, so I went in, and paid for a Norton internal download. I started the download, and the software I purchased wouldnt load. I had to call a subcontract tech place for the low price of $3.95 a minute. They told me to uninstall Norton 2005 and download 2006. I did so, but the program kept giving false starts. Finally, after 3 hours tonight, the program downloaded. Then, as I thought I was done, it did a full virus scan, found some problems, and supposedly fixed them. As I sit here, it detected other problems, at least one, and it doing another full virus scan. Iam about ready to bash this thing in with a hammer! In the meantime, I had a friend waiting for me online tonight, and received offline Yahoo im's, wasnt on to talk to the person, and now they have gone to bed. Iam fit to be tied!
I hope Iam done with the problems after today! Iam just like GRRRRR! already.

Damn man, that is the day from hell!

The low price, yeah, we have all heard that before.

Yes, Aachen, it was the day from hell, and yes, we have all heard the low price story.
Thankfully, my computer has calmed down. After the second full virus scan, it removed a couple of pesky adware files, and now is better. I hope not to see it again until next Thursday, as this thing really needs to chill for a while, and so do I!

Whoa! I just bought Norton 2006 to replace the 2005. Now you got me wondering whether it's worth it. Maybe I'll call someone a lot smarter with computers than I am (like the 5 year old across the street), and get that person to do it. This will do one of two things. Either it will successfully load the new antivirus program and everyone goes home happy... or... it'll screw with my computer the way it did yours, except I'll have someone else to blame it on.

Microsoft Update

You should go to Microsoft update and download the Maclious Tool Remover, it help find viruses and remove them for free also, download the anti-spyware from Yahoo and Microsoft. this will help when your anti-virus defs, craps out.

Chaos, I'm not sure what to advise. Maybe you should talk to someone else, because I dont want to steer you wrong. Stl, and Valerie, thanks for the advice. I can recall Kurch telling me that Norton sucks, and he recommended another antivirus program. (Macafee, I believe) I guess the thing was that I already had Norton in here for a few years, so I decided to stick with it. I'll see what happens next year.

Mitch..if you have aol 9.0 you already have McCaffey installed for free...it is part of their service..If so it may be the reason you are having problems as Norton is not very friendly when it comes to other programs....also....you dont want to install a lot of different ad and spyware programs as they often interfere with one another...

Yes, Ray, I do have AOL 9.0. I have Mcafee installed for free? As in, I didnt need this godforsaken 100 dollar program with all the aggravation I had? GRRRR! Okay, thank you, I'll remember this next year.
Also, I do have one additional spyware cleaner program installed on my computer. I bought it a few months ago. It works okay, but I dont activate it much. Usually, the Norton will find and remove many adware files when I do my regular weekly scan.
Thanks for the info, Ray.

I have had terrible experiences with Norton products and recommend the free Avast or AVG antivirus products instead.

hey mistress how come u can not recieve private messages anymore?????????????????????????????????/

She probably disabled them due to being harassed by some people in PM's.

Mitch, drop the Norton. It's more damn trouble than it's worth. I religiously used Norton for years, not knowing what a pc disabler it really was. Now I use McAfee and I'm much happier.

Worth noting, that McAffee and Norton do NOT get along. I've seen the two completely disable each other when installed on the same system. Whichever you one pick, make sure you don't have the other one installed.

That said, unlike everyone else here, I strongly recommend Norton. I've used it on my computer for 5 years, and it's saved me plenty of hassle. I leave my computer on all the time, so it does virus scans twice a week and scans windows for errors 3 times a week (windows tends to self-corrupt). I do buy Norton Systemworks though, which has more then just the anti-virus. For example, it has a program that monitors all my software installations so that if something goes wrong, and windows looses it's uninstall information, Norton can uninstall it. My father also subscribes to consumer reports, which a couple years ago rated it above McAffee.

The computers here at school all use McAffee, and I hate it every time I have to use one of their computers. It's probably just the way it's set up, but it runs scans in the background that take up 50%+ of the CPU power, where I almost never see Norton at 1%.

Norton doesn't detect everything, but very little does. You can also download Ad-Aware for free, to get rid of a lot of ad ware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

Good luck with your computer, hopefully it's back to fully functioning again.

Actually, my Norton seems to be functioning okay. Since I posted this thread, like 3 months ago, as most people know, I have dropped AOL and switched to Comcast, due to a combined Norton/AOL problem, that caused my computer to be down. As I dont feel like spending another $50 right now to download a new virus protector, I'll stick with the Norton, unless I have any more problems. My computer really has been much better, since getting rid of AOHELL. Thanks anyway for the advice, Mimi, but as of now, I am fine.

Mitch, im sorry! I hope your Night is better then your day 🙂 :redheart:

Oh geez, I'm sorry....I didn't look at the date to see that this thread is several months old. I don't know WHY someone decided to ressurrect it for reasons that were completely OFF TOPIC to the thread! Cripes.

Sorry, Mooks....disregard my post. Would you like me to lock this thread so no one else posts to it?

Mimi

First off, no problem. Your post was cool. I just merely wanted to explain my reasons about why I wanted to keep Norton.
Second, yes, it might be best if you do lock this thread. Since this issue was taken care of months ago, we dont need people posting in this thread, and maybe mods getting e-mails for something that is months old, and has been dealt with. So, yes, a lock on the thread would probably be best. Thank you.
