is running Windows XP, check this out.
This small utility closes port 5000 in XP and stops your PC from acting like a 'wide-open internet server'.
I ran this utility on my machine earlier today, have booted several times since (no, for OTHER reasons!

) and I'm still here.
Check it out, but use your own judgement of course.

I'm running XP but I haven't gotten hacked or virused ever. Maybe it's because I'm on a double firewall.

You might be ok. I run the free Zonealarm and my port 5000 was open.
Issue "netstat -an" from a command prompt and it will
tell you if port 5000 is 'listening'.

GAWD that's alot of little white letters. Yep, it's listening. But I don't worry about it, since it seems I have to wipe the whole thing anyway every month for some reason or other.

Hmph. Cheater.😀

Correct evil laugh: MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Why Use??

A double firewall? The one that comes with Windows is as good as any firewall available.
I've used it for years and have never had any trouble.

You've been lucky, Tron. We had the one with XP set up for the tightest security and still got hacked last year. Now, with that AND Norton's firewall, we're pretty secure...though the jerks still try.

I have XP on my home PC with Norton Anti-Virus (always kept up to date) and a router and have never had a hacker or a virus problem.

Combo security

Routers can protect your network/computer against hackers and unauthorized access from the Internet. The NAT service hides local IP addresses from the Internet. Stateful Packet Inspection, Port Forwarding, and customisable filters allow only authorized traffic to come through (providing you have correctly set-up the filtering aspects of the router). I strongly recommend one if you can survive the loss of some signal strength. A good router will cut about 10-20% though, so it IS a trade-off. Cheaper ones will drop 30+% on you, so shop carefully. Obviously if you run multiple puters this is a handy device for several reasons, but the security features add another incentive..... Q

@Tron: Technically, it's a triple firewall. I forgot about the one Windows comes with. The others are Norton and one that is built in to the Router that I am on.

There's a new worm in the pipe only 6 days old, called Fizzer.

E-mail attachments are the best source however.

My comp just exploded in my face and burnt my fingers, so I really really don't give a damn if it has a virus on it
