It was 150 years ago today, on January 1, 1863, that Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

As you can remind yourself by reading it, it only applied to the "areas in rebellion."
It wasn't until December 6, 1865, that the 13th Amendment completed the job of abolishing slavery in all of the U.S.

Thirteenth Amendment

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

You should see the latest movie called "Lincoln" where the story line is the passing of the 13th Amendment.

My friend saw the movie and she wants to go again.......I might attend with her.

I heard it's a pretty decent movie; I look forward to seeing if they actually accurately portray history or is this just another Hollywood bomb.

We shall see!

It was a Hollywood bomb, but that is my opinion...

You know those moments when you've first woken up and you read something completely wrong, and then like half an hour later realize that your groggy brain just accepted something completely batshit crazy as truth?

Well, half an hour ago, I thought Mils was celebrating his 150th birthday.

:hbday:

I'll settle for the proverbial 120. :rowfull:
And my birthday is March 17th.
