WEST, Texas — A large explosion rocked the town of West, Texas, 19 miles north of Waco, on Wednesday evening.

KWTX in Waco is reporting that 70 people are confirmed dead. CNN says those deaths include five firefighters and one police officer. Hundreds of others are wounded in the town with a population of about 2,800.
According to KWTX, the explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer located at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, near Interstate 35.
An emergency dispatcher appealed for more help. "I need anybody and everybody," she said.

"It was like a nuclear bomb went off," said one man who was looking for a lost relative.

A source told WFAA in Dallas that a large swath of the small town with a population of 2,800 has been leveled.

The blast around 8 p.m. was at the West Fertilizer plant at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, about a half-mile east of Interstate 35.

Shortly before 10 p.m., a dispatcher was advising emergency crews to move away from the burning plant due to concern about chemicals in unexploded tanks.

A triage center that was set up at the West High School football field was evacuated because of its proximity to the burning plant.

"There was a huge shock wave," said Mark Licknovsky who works at the Czech Stop, less than one mile away on Interstate 35. "That's when we knew something was serious."

Every house within four blocks of the facility was heavily damaged, according to initial reports.

"I can see heavy smoke here; there are emergency crews everywhere," said WFAA's Todd Unger as he arrived in the devastated town. "We're looking at a home and it is a total loss. There are flames shooting up 10-15 feet."

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed there were multiple injuries. No accurate count was available.

At least 10 structures are on fire in the town, including a school which is next door to the plant.

Rescue vehicles from North Texas agencies were racing to the scene on I-35.

Everyone in the community has been asked to evacuate. Schools in West will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

The American Red Cross said teams from Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin will be coordinating with emergency officials in West to provide any needed assistance to town residents who will need help. The Red Cross was attempting to identify a location to set up a shelter for evacuees.

A shock wave from the explosion may have been felt in parts of North Texas and mistaken for an earthquake.

"I live in Groesbeck," wrote Rayne Sibley on WFAA's Facebook page. "I heard a large boom and my house shook."

Facebook users in Venus, Grandview, Cleburne, Ennis and Ferris also reported feeling the shock wave.

"Shook my doors!" wrote Nancy Procaccini of Combine. "Thought it was earthquake!"

Traffic on I-35 was backed up for miles. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to make room for emergency traffic.

I saw a video of the actual explosion..it was incredible. I would be shocked to see many survivors after that...what a terrible tragedy.

There are reports of looting in the area. Lowlife scum...

Looters should be shot on site. There is no excuse.

Total deaths reported is only 15 at this time.............................

however they may find people in collapsed buildings.

Looting in Texas? Yeah, the death toll will rise, but it won't be from that explosion. Texans are the biggest proponents of property rights in this country...bad idea to loot there.

All the media outlets I've checked are reporting 5 - 15 dead, with 160 injured, some in critical condition. A handful of firefighters are unaccounted for.

Looting was also reported during the wildfires that ravaged much of Texas in 2011. West is a small town of about 2,800, the kind of place where everybody pretty much knows everybody else. I'd bet my bottom dollar those looters are from Waco or some other town in the area.

that is so friggen sad so much bull crap happening lately

Fuckin' ammonium nitrate...same stuff those terrorists used in Oklahoma City back in '95.

That poor town...

Making fertilizer is more dangerous than I thought. 🙁 🙁

As the story of the senseless acts of murder in Boston unfolds, the tragedy in West, Texas, seems to be getting little attention. That's understandable in a way, in that what happened in Boston appear to have been a deliberate, cruel, attack on innocent people. The explosion in West will likely be due to equipment failure or human error.

With all that said, the citizens of this little town need our help. Here is one link where donations can be sent. If you can spare a few dollars, please chip in.

I'm actually very disappointed that this explosion acquired so little media attention.

The only difference in the two tragedies is that one was deliberate, and the other was not. What the hell difference does that make? People still died. Families were still torn apart.

It's just awful the way our media operates.

You hit the nail on the head with your last sentence. This is not the east or west coast, so they lose intrest pretty quickly.

As a labourer I have a lot of respect for those who work in chemical plants or even primarily with volatile chemicals.. I wouldn't want to do it myself.

What really gets me is that with chemicals uncontained during the aformentioned explosion, the word "injured/injuries" takes on an ominous new meaning.
