70's Underground Dance Music(not night fever)

Does anyone know and apreciate true dance music of the late 1970's?? If so, let me know some artists you like and I'll tell you how underground it is. I spin and mix the stuff in my spear time and have had a few of my mixes featured on the now defunked Dance Groove Radio at www.discomusic.com Check this site out if you don't know about this music and want to learn.

there were quite a few groups that when played, caused my Dad to threaten to bury the tapes in the back yard...does that count as underground? 😉 Q

LOL!!!!!!! Not really, I'd like to burry quite a bit of the top 40 radio disco stuff. Artists that are good are for instance:
Cerrone
Giorgio Moroder
Alec R Costandinos
Magnifique
Kat Mandu
Wonerland Band
Amanda Lear
Things to that nature(if you ever heard of any of these)

haven't heard them...was more of a Stones guy. We thought Hot Tuna and 10 Years After were pretty underground at the time though...lol. Then again, our hair was in our eyes...and ears..and mouths...sigh..it was a bad time, fashion wise, for being a guy. Q

an interesting topic

Very cool! I love talk of anything musical and outside the normal spectrum of tastes. I lived through the disco era but was too young at the time to appreciate anything other than the popular stuff. I'm only familiar with a couple of disco singles that weren't all over the airwaves:

The Joneses- 'Sugar Pie Guy' well written tune mixing doo-wop and disco- don't know anything about the group
Lemon- 'Chance to Dance' TK productions tune, perhaps- seems to me to be one of the earliest examples of a synthetic drum (cymbal) sound
Alan Parsons- 'I Wouldn't Want to be Like You' not a disco artist but a good, disco tune
Raydio- 'You Can't Change That' borderline disco- Ray Parker Jr.'s band
Material- 'Come Down' or 'I'm the One' New York band of avant-garde players had a disco hit with 'Busting Out' in 1981. Nile Rodgers and Nona Hendryx played with them during this era. Nona Hendryx went on to release her own avant-disco stuff with said players in the early-eighties

I'm not really familiar with the any of the European stuff, but I am interested.

we all know who the big daddy of the time was......Herbie Hancock and the album "Head Hunters" did it get any better? I think not.

Blimey!!!

Look at me telling Americans about their own music!! "Head Hunters" is one of the classic albums of all time, in any genre, it was a pace setter for popular music for decades. Herbie Hancock moved in to electronic music and took the whole thing my the scruff of the neck and kicked its butt for it. The album has been copied, ripped off and sampled ever since, go check it out dude!!! (Hark at me with the yankee lingo!!!)
