A Character Study of Belle from Beauty and the Beast

I sketched out some characters on my notepad and decided that I'd like to do an entire series of characters from old fairy tales (and even outside of that...but continous in the theme of them being fake characters).

After penciling, I inked with a brush pen and scanned in it to Photoshop to do cleanup work and coloring. And of course since I was talking to Sandrock and the time and he's ga-ga over redheads, I was influenced to make her hair red. I went with green for her dress and eyes because it seemed to match well with the red and is a very rich color to work with.

So hey, feedback is always welcome, good or bad, if you feel so inclined.

Very, very beautiful sketch. I LOVE your style. Haven't quite seen the way you draw before. 'Least not around here. Beautiful work. I especially love her hair. Looks like fire. Lots of movement.

One question, her stomach - is she wearing something? Like, she's not exposing her midriff, right?

Right. I felt compelled to almost make it a tight fitting bodice piece that is wrapped over the dress. Hence the color of the dress on the top and then on the bottom as well. I decided on a very pale, neutral yellow to color it as I didn't want it fighting with anything else.

first off, i absolutely love your style hun, you have very controlled lines with pen of all things. The wild red hair does balance well with the flowy big skirt. I'm guessing the ribbon in her hand is her hair band.

As for facial details, you have a nice combination of the western style with a bit of japanese styling to it, with the eye showing through the hair. the inclusion of the monroe on her lip is pretty sexy, along with the bodice.

It's Sand's fault.

Well, you know, I'm not sure. I always pictured her as this person who was a bit more of a free spirit who liked to go outside and do whatever felt good. It probably seems a bit of out character and time frame, but it showed off her long legs as well. So for being beauty I guess I wanted to show her assets! I imagine for the rest of the characters I do they might be boardering *****. 😀

For deeper critique the thing i would pay attention to is the scale and anatomy.

Her right foot should technically be smaller yes because it's further away, however they're still more or less on the same plane so they should be very similar in size.

I really like how you were careful to include all the lines for the bones and tendons.

About the anatomy, i would study the muscles in the arms a bit more, her left forearm is nearing popeye status, i'm aware of the foreshortening on the right arm but her left should be a little more slender i think.

Thanks! I'll bank these points. I sort of thought the same thing about her arm, but after a while it was hard to see it for what it was because I stared at it so much.
