A great evening ends on a sour note

Tonight ended on a decidedly sour note.

I was driving back from a party about an hour from here. I'd had nothing to drink except water or kool aid (i.e., no alcohol). I was kind of tired but basically straight enough to drive. An unexpected blast from the Damned's first CD assured that! No caffeine needed when you've got "I Feel Alright" or “Neat Neat Neat” blaring in your ears!

I was about ¾ of a mile from home, taking a route which took me behind a local supermarket. There in the middle of the road was what looked to me like an empty plastic grocery bag being pushed along by a breeze.

It sure didn't sound like one when I ran over it. I never knew what “sickening crunch” meant until that moment.

I doubled back to see what I'd hit. I hoped against hope that it was a varmint, a possum or a skunk.

It was a young cat.

Now, an old girlfriend and I had lost a couple of beloved kitties to the road. I thought of looking for homes with lights on to see if I could locate the owner, but that I considered much too risky it being after midnight in a somewhat dodgy neighborhood. So I did the only other thing I could think of to do. I called the police (not 911, their non-emergency number). I had to wait almost 45 minutes for the cop to show up. He was decent though. After checking my license, reg and insurance card he told me what I'd most likely hit was a stray as there were a lot in town lately. I thought it might be rabid because of the way it moved, or rather didn't seem too eager to get out of my way (how else could I mistake it for an inanimate shopping bag?). He seemed to agree. Maybe he was just trying to reassure me. I certainly hope it wasn't someone's pet. I've known the anger and grief at losing a beloved kitty to the road and no way wanted to inflict that on someone else.

Should I have not driven home that evening? Was it just a combination of a dark night, a badly-lit street and maybe being more tired than I realized? Or do things like this just happen sometimes despite our best efforts to avoid them?

Poor kitty. At least I hope it didn't suffer too much.

Don't blame yourself these things happen..

Crack open a beer, stick New Rose on loud & rock out to the captain & co!

It's fine, I almost got into a major accident because I swerved around a possum and got into another lane. Some things just happen

I think you did the right thing. Knocking on strangers doors (especially that late, in a bad part of town) has bad news written all over it. A shame about the cat, but sometimes it can't be helped.

So, it is okay to accidently kill the innocent animal you detest(or, don't care for)? Don't get me wrong, animals and humans die all the time. Animals die for food, and people die for worm food and maggots. Unless, the person wanted to be cremated. That is not the point though...

How do you know that the cat might have been owned by a animal abuser? They wanted to be free! Once they were free; they ended up at the wrong place, and at the wrong time?

You did the right thing calling the police. I know it is the law here that all "accidents" involving animals should be reported. I know it's tragic and I'm sorry you went through that.

The statement that I highlighted is exactly what I said when I first read this.

That being said, these things do happen and are sometimes unavoidable.

If I saw a child stepping on a cockroach, should I report him for being homicidal?

Well, i think the main thing to understand here is that the types of animals that were stated tend not to be peoples pets. The OP also stated that had lost pets of their own in a similiar matter as well, making it a more personal loss.

Anyway, Kop, try not to let it upset you too much. It sucks, but sadly sometimes these things happen. Sometimes though things just happen so fast, we really don't have any control over them.

Domestic animals are considered possessions. Technically, it's property damage...And on another note, I have to get the SPCA and the police involved with a case of a child senselessly injuring a kitten by slamming it into the floor. I don't make light of harm to animals, especially domesticated ones.

Sad story, bro! 🙁 I've had a few close calls with cats in my time too. Even burst into tears once when I drove past a squished kitty during my very first driving lesson LOL. I love animals to bits and hate seeing harm done to them, but in this instance it was simply an accident. Don't beat yourself up too much about it all, not many people would be as concerned as you were after such an event. My neighbour across the street once ran over my next door neighbour's cat on christmas eve and couldn't bear telling them what had happened so just left him there for the family to find. Twas heartbreaking to say the least!

I commend you for treating the death of an animal the same as you would treat the death of a human. Animals deserve compassion too 🙂Llike you said, I just hope he/she went quickly. Bummer of a way to end your night.

First, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry this happened to you.

As for you driving home that night: I think you're going too far back into the cause of the events. I think the most important thing for you to get from this is to be more careful in the future. If there are no cars behind you, or no cars on the oncoming lane, try to avoid the object, even if it's just a plastic bag. Otherwise, I believe that, by law, you need to run the small critter over or else you could be considered the cause of an accident. Don't slam on your brakes, don't swerve like a madman. Just drive carefully and make the best judgement.

I own 3 cats, a dog and 2 ferrets, and I love them like family. I've lost cats to foxes, to the road, the terrible neighbors. I know the pain. Your empathy is good place for you to be, but don't torture yourself over it. Pay your condolences and take a lesson from it. If you do find out that the cat had a family, pay your respects. Share their grief, but DO NOT let them beat you down for it. It is obvious to me you regret the event and had no ill intentions. That means that it'll be easy for someone to make you FEEL like a terrible person, even though you are not.

Hope you find some cheer soon.
