Some of you might remember that in another thread Neutron was comparing the dismal lack of sucess from British athletes to the dazzling sucess of the American ones. Okay, here it comes! I am gonna break all the traditions and customs about polite conversation that I hold dear!!!!!!😡 😡 😡

Neutron.......YOU DAMN RIGHT BROTHER!!!!!!

Oh God, I said it! I actually admitted to agreeing with the Tron-Meister! 😀

I see a big problem with the way that this country treats up and coming sportsmen. In the USA there are academies of excellence ranging from pro-wrestling, to flower arranging. And what does the UK have? Polo clubs that only tossers can afford to subscribe to. In the US there are even scholarships for promising athletes that will enable them to go to college. The US culture nurtures and supports potential sportmen and sportswomen in the hope that one day they will be able to represent their contry at the international level. The UK government could'nt give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut!:sowrong: :disgust: Is it then any wonder why a sucessful Olympic Games, means one where we manage to win a single gold medal?

In this country, future hopefuls have to fight, kick and sweat their way up the ladder like in any other. But instead of fighting against other competitors they're fighting against lack of funds and a COLOSSAL lack of interest! There seems to be far too much of the "sports is a gentlemans passtime, it's not the winning that counts, it's the taking part" attitude. That's not to condemn people who are graceful in defeat, that's a great thing. But having such an amateurish approach to our future stars will forever condemn our young sports stars to the scrapheap of international mediocrity.

I agree with your observations, Jim. American athletes DO hold a lot over Brittish ones...as the Soviet block countries do over us. However, there are some problems with the system. Student athletes given sports scholarships are often NOT getting a decent education. Why? Because the almighty dollar rules.

To get financial backing and team ranking many coaches will pull all possible strings to keep their players on the field. Coaches have been caught paying off professors to pass their students...after choosing cushy course loads for them to begin with. (I suspect this is likely a part of the reason that Tron chose an academic scholarship rather than the sports one...as he mentioned in another post.)

Now I'm not saying that there aren't students who do well and keep up with their studies. There are some excellent students who complete heavy course loads in addition to their athletic efforts. I tip my hat (or would if I was wearing one) to them. But often, those who are poor students are kept in the system through bribes and other illegal acts. In the end, all that teaches them is that cheating can get you what you want...a terrible disservice.

The Sad Part..

Is I believe the British put a larger emphasis on physical education while kids are in school. I've always wondered if their lack of success has to do with Athletics being more social in Britain whereas in America they can be used for social status or as a way out of a bad neighborhood. Usually with stimulus like those a person will succeed if thats what they want to do.

I've always wondered because there have been some marvelous European Athletes. But as a society they don't seem to turn them out at the rate the US does.

Well I did receive an athletic scholarship for basketball... and played throughout college........ But my grades were so awesome that I could have gotten Academic as well.... But I just love playing ball.

I agree that some of the NCAA coaches and scouts are pretty corrupted.... (other levels too)... But there are plenty of athletes such as myself who saw a higher calling.... I am very proud of my education and glad I made it through. Please understand that there are also plenty of STAR STUDENT ATHLETES....

One of them became a STAR TEACHER... heehee 😛. I love teaching!

Me Too..

I didn't take my athletic scholarship. I took the academic one so I could play ball and not have a coach telling me when I could schedule my classes. I had a lab until 4 pm. Practice started at 430PM. I had about a 10 minute walk from from the lab to practice but I made both everyday. And made All American too. So it can be done. Other guys and girls did it too. We had a lady on our B Ball team who took a tremendous class load. Graduated something like 5th in our class. And she ended up being the colleges all time leading scorer. I always admired that.

About the state of English sport...

Commonwealth Games, doodah, doodah! 😀

They sent all their best athletes here 200 years ago for stealing a loaf of bread.

While the Limeys went moudly in the constant rain, they sent their criminals to lay on a beach in the sun 🙄

They certainly did better than the ones who landed up in Wormwood Scrubs.😀
