A pig question

A small pig farmer with 3 sons and 17 pigs has died, and in his will he had decreed:

The eldest son shall get half of the pigs, the middle son one third, and the youngest one a ninth.

The sons are clueless how to solve this problem, so they ask their uncle for help.

How would YOU help the sons with a simple practical solution, but without selling the pigs and dividing just the money? 😉

If I were their uncle, I'd first give them another pig as a present, claiming all pigs that remain after the division as my own. Clearly, they'd receive more pigs if I give them one for free first!

Then, having 18 pigs to divide, the oldest would get a third: 18/3=6. With his six pigs, he should be happily on his way.

The second son would then receive a sixth: 18/6=3. Three pigs now his property, there he goes into the sunset, smiling all the way.

The youngest, grumpily, would then receive his share of a nineth: 18/9=2. With his two measly pigs, I'd usher him off of my property, ignoring his bitter curses at the bad deal he received.

I'd then see what remains for me: 18-6-3-2 pigs means I'd be left with 7 pigs. Even if I subtract the pig I so selflessly donated, I'd still be six pigs the richer. With a gleeful laugh, I'd revel in my good fortune and thumb my nose at the incompetent sons, who couldn't find their own solution and thus had to ask me for help.

If this scam didn't work, my advice to them would have something to do with a chainsaw and how to divide pigs into fractions.

Damn, why did I have to ask a methematical question? I confused the numbers!, the correct number is now in the original question. Marauder is on the right track anyway.

Now having 18 pigs (well, 17 plus virtual pigmon), We can divide it up quite easily.

First son: 18/2=9 pigs. Second: 18/3=6 pigs. Third: 18/9=2 pigs. That's all in all 9+6+2=17 pigs. Which means I can collect my virtual pigmon and stuff it back into its pigmon-ball. All are happy - safe me, who didn't profit from the deal. I liked the first solution better 🙂
