I'm doing a small essay on Atheism in america and other nations, and I thought about something. What demographic of Atheists and Agnostics come from what backgrounds? Like what religion were you or did you merely have no religion and groew yup in an Atheist family?

I take it that type is more strict than the typical catholic household? What made you go the direction you did?

The hypocrisy, the antiquated rules, the strictness, and the fact that nothing about it appealed to me.

Agnostic, only because I think it's just as stupid to believe there definitely is a god as it is to believe there definitely isn't one, without proof of either. Although "proof" is debatable.

Did you ever look into other religions before going Agnostic?

I went Agnostic first, but I practice Buddhism from time to time as well. I'll occasionally go over to the local Zen Temple and do some meditation. That's pretty much it though.

What attracted you to this religion? (I ask because my friend who is actually Athiest now went to buddhism first and then went Atheist and I wanted to see what made you choose.)

It's more laid back. The main focus is to be happy. And things just seem to make more sense for me.

I'm agnostic myself. I'm unsure either way, am open to others ideas and views but ultimately don't care in the end. 😛
But I did grow up in a partially-Christian background, attending Sunday school when I was young and Mass at Christmas. ^^

I didn't really have a religion. I was brought up on a focus of ethical behaviours and looking after those your love rather than religious beliefs or doctrines. 🙂

I was raised Catholic

Also raised Catholic, still love and respect Catholics though and alot of my family is Catholic. But I'm a godless communist :super_hap

I was a methodist. I read the Bible and found it disgusting, and decided that God was a bit too much like Santa for comfort, so I gradually became an atheist.

I also like dabbling in heathen/buddhist religion, but I don't believe in an actual asgard or some of the supernatural crap in buddhism.

Waitaminute now. What beef do you have with Santa? I mean, c'mon! He's jolly! He gives toys to kids! What's not to love?

Hmmm...what about Metaphysics?

I think the only way we can truly appreciate Santa is Metaphysically. I mean, how else is one guy on a reindeer-sleigh going to bring toys to all the world's good girls and boys in a single evening?

Agnostic. Bkgrd: white protestant upper-middle class (WASP?) in a mixed, predominantly Catholic neighborhood. I would later date a woman who described herself as a 'recovering Catholic'. Might be a theme here.
