A type of hat, 1897, in allusion to Trilby O'Ferrall, eponymous heroine of the novel by George du Maurier (1834-96), published in 1894. In the stage version of the novel, the character wore this type of soft felt hat. In plural, also slang for "feet" (1895), in allusion to the eroticism attached to the heroine's bare feet.

Well get this...in the book "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" which was written quite a while ago...and set in 1900's ....a music teacher would have his female students remove their socks, shoes and stand there barefoot as they played...he spent the lesson time staring in rapture at their feet, instead of teaching them music..i'm talking grade school kids here....

Besides ... I'm only ever in a church at funerals or weddings. It would do me NO good if they started having new 'Trilby' auctions there.
