hai! i've been having RealPlayer issues and was given a new installer by a tech. however, when trying to install the new RP, i get a message that says "You currently do not have Administrator access to the Windows registry. Please see your System Administrator to install RealPlayer.".

i am set up as THE Admin for Windows, according to my settings. is there something else i need to change in order to install RP? i have been dealing with their tech support for over a week now (mostly because their overseas staff barely comprehend English) and would rather have some real help in the matter.

thanks!

go to C:\Windows\Temp and delete these three files:

WFV1.tmp
Wait
GetVer

Then, reboot into safe mode with networking. (As you're rebooting, hit F8 over and over to get a boot menu.)

Then, install realplayer in safe mode with networking.

no go. none of those files exist on the computer to begin with, and the Safe Mode idea didn't work either. thanks for the assist, though.

If you've never had this problem installing programs before I find it hard to believe you aren't already an administrator. Tell me, do you desperately need RealPlayer for something specific? I can give you an alternative player that will play Realmedia files but is not RealPlayer if you like.

If you are able to access Safe Mode you might want to try using the "Administrator" account to do the install. This is a separate account that, if not disabled, only appears when you are logging in to Safe Mode.

desperately? no. i just have several video files i like to watch that are in .rm format. and i have never had an issue, until now, in installing software or hardware. and i did try the Administrator account in Safe Mode and i still got the same message as mentioned above.

if you have something else i can use, i'd love to get it from you.

If the default Administrator account didn't work then you have one of two problems. One, your OS has some serious issues going on just under the surface. The lack of troubles with any other program would point away from this. The second possibility is that RealPlayer is having issues, one I can believe more than the first.

RealAlternative will play most any RealMedia file. It's free: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/real_Alternative.htm

go back into that Temp folder and delete everything related to realplayer, then try installing in safe mode with networking again.

the problem is that realplayer's installer makes files in the Temp folder that it uses for install. if the install is interrupted somehow, those files never get removed. so, when you try to install again, realplayer tries to write to those files, but it can't because the installer locks access to those files. realplayer's installer ASSUMES that it's because you don't have administrator privileges, but really it's bad error handing in their installer.

so, yeah, delete anything and everything related to realplayer from your PC (except for the videos you want to play!) and start from scratch.

i don't see any RealPlayer files in the TEMP folder, and i've already erased any and all RealPlayer related files (except for videos) from the hard drive. as i had tole RealPlayer technicians (who barely understood written English) that the problem is their installer.

HDS, thanks for the substitute. i'll give it a go. thanks again for the help. if anyone has any other ideas, i'm open to them.
