I learned something in my Abnormal Psychology class today that might be of interest to many of you.

When a person suffers a trauma that results in PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) they lose a significant amount of endorphins. This loss makes it difficult, at best, for the brain to release them naturally. That is why so many people with PTSD turn to drugs and alcohol.

I sat there in amazement listening to this. That totally explains that while I hate the act of being tickled, I love it as well. That release is something my body craves and needs.

Something to think about.

Jen
You learn something new every day. 🙂

Jen, that makes perfect sense! thank you for posting it.

I am going to be looking in to this. it explains so much.

Yes, laughing is good for you because it releases endorphins. Perhaps tickling should be used as a treatment for PTSD? 😀 Thanks for the info, Jen. 🙂

Jen, thank you for the info -- I have not specifically heard about PTSD causing endorphins to be reduced, but it does make intuitive sense. I had often theorised that there might be some physiological basis for some of the "alternate lifestyle" preferences, and this would seem to bear that out.

If you can provide me with any specific information (pubished references, etc.) about PTSD and endorphins, please e-mail me at [email protected] -- thanks!

Happy tickling,

I had heard this...and the fact that any strenuous physical activity can help to release endorphins. It's something good to know. However, the point should also be made that anyone suffereing from PTSD should seek help to resolve the issues involved. This alone can help bring things back into balance....not that we'd ever stop tickling/being tickled.

Ann

I agree with Ann and echo that one needs to seek professional help if they experience symptoms of PTSD. I did not even get involved in my pursuit of thickling or other bdsm play until I had resolved most of my issues in therapy.

There was a very controvertial therapy back in the 70's that used tickling. I cannot remember the psychiatrist's name, but his approach was called Z-Therapy.

Anyone remember this. I read his book years ago.

I can only say that from personal experience, the Endorphin Release I got from SBG1 kept me on a "high" for about 2 weeks. Looking forward to next weekend.

I just remembered. His name was Dr. Richard Zazlow and he was a professor of clinical psychology at San Jose State University. He called this form of therapy the Z-process, a form of attachment therapy.
