this is what happens when students forget about upcoming tests. They end up hiding from their study notes and trying to forget hundreds of pages of useless buzzwords and cliches.

It's such a pointless subject, and deals entirely with new ways to ensure that your money isn't yours for very long. It's such a sophisticated pickpocket system, designed to subconsciously trick you into keeping your credit cards hot in your hands. It makes me sick sometimes to read about the studies done that give massive conglomerations yet another way to get inside the head of my little sister and tell her that she won't be pretty or popular if she doesn't use this makeup and wear those clothes.

Phew, that feels better! All that hot air has been quickly vented, now I'm going back to study.

Anyone else with the same opinion on brain-washing/marketing?

What's sad about marketing is that it actually works, at least to some extent. I can understand a company wanting to advertise its product, but many times, it tries to sell said product by pointing out irrelevant things or coming up with a slick ad campaign. Yes, marketing is all about $ and not providing the best to the consumer. But in this age of sound bites, corporate greed, and infomercials, marketing is here to stay. 🙁

As long as there is money to be had, marketing will be around to harass us into buying shit we don't need.

Short answer...

No.

Long answer....

Marketing has been around forever and consists of more than picking pockets. Without marketing nothing gets promoted and nothing gets done, from buying a stick of gum to building international alliances.

What you object to, Biggles, is American marketing, the gold standard of the industry and the style every non-American marketer wants to emulate. Just as modern technology is the bastard child of business and science, and modern entertainment the bastard of business and art, so is modern marketing the unholy offspring of business and psychology. Having made my living in marketing for over a quarter century, I can understand your distaste. But I believe that a better mousetrap builds a better mouse. Marketing teaches that happiness can't be bought - a good lesson that can't be learned without trying to buy it. 😉

I agree Biggles, but that probably won't suprise you. 😀

Good explanation, EQ. I guess that's what I object to also. No country is better at marketing than my own, and every day we Americans are bombarded with ads on our TV and computer screens. It's just too bad that some people will buy a product just because a celebrity endorses it or it's featured in a stupid (but sometimes funny) commercial. Nevertheless, as you said, marketing can also be educational. 😉

not intentionally towards American marketing, just that style of in-your-face pushing 'you must buy' aggressive constant placement of products.

Austin Powers 3 made me cry out in annoyance at the unending product placement. Considering Mike Myers had made fun of placement in that beautiful scene in Wayne's World, it was sad to see him become the very thing he had parodied.

Yeah baby! That's the marketing I know and love! LOL! Yes, it is relentless, which is how I think of most American product. BTW, my honey pointed out that if the job were just picking pockets, it'd be soooo much easier. And, may I add, a far better return on investment! :manicd:

And much more fun to study! We'd all get to dress up like cockney lads and have Fagin to look after us!

Con-sider yourself, our mate! Con-sider yourself, at 'ome!

True, but he did get paid $25 million, I believe, so he had a pretty good excuse for becoming his own parody. 😀

Ohhhhhhh nooooooooooooo.................... You've done it now ya aussie git! Now we're going to be inundated with cockney impersonations of the Dick Van Dyke standard. Where's GuitarPeteTklr when you need him?

Well, that'd be the end of the business for me...I'd never manage the high kicks.....

*splutter* Why I never! The nerve!

...oh wait...

you meant the rosy cheeks on my face...

So this post went from marketing to Dick Van Dyke's performance in Mary Poppins? (I may be American, but I'm not dumb.) Talk about off-topic--and aided by a moderator, no less! Just kidding, I couldn't think of anything else to post. 😀

Don't worry about that AMK. Rest assured that the rest of the world does not judge you all by the standards of your President. :blaugh:

Y'know Biggles, I think your natural charm has garnered you a lot of female admirers. 😀

hahaha!

well, if it ain't the natural charm, it's gotta be the pheremone spray!

Otherwise known as "Richie and Eddie Syndrome"!

"That's right Richie! Let's go back to the flat, spray a load of this on and see if we can pick up some birds!" 😀
