I haven't been around for about a week now, here's why:

For awhile now, Mrs. guitman has wanted me to network our two computers together so that she can get the DSL on her laptop. Well, after having my friend bale on me for a month, I decided I would try it myself. It didn't look to hard, there was even a wizard to do it.

Well, it didn't work, in fact it completely screwed up my compter. I could no longer get on the internet.

After an hour on the phone with my computer friend expert in Alabama, still nothing. After another hour on the phone with Bellsout tech support, still nothing. After waiting for 5 hours to download a program on my wife's computer (via dialup) that the tech support guy said should fix the problem, still nothing. After another 45 minutes on the phone with anohter tech support guy, finally something...

NOW MY COMPUTER WOULD NOT BOOT UP AT ALL!!!

So, I had to wait until today until my friend (he felt guilty about not doing the networking to begin with, which caused me to screw it up) to come over and fix it.

It took him 3 hours, finally found out the problem was caused by a program that I didn't even install sitting in my system.

I'm back now, but it's gonna take me forever to catch up.

Not a good sign...

I'm gonna attempt a network later in the year, just a simple one between 2 computers to split an ADSL connection and share a printer. It looks easy in the magazines! 😛

That's exacatly what I was trying to do Biggles.

Here's a tip, make sure you don't have New.net in your Add/Remove list. That's what screwed me over.

Basically,

If you don't get everything exactly right it doesn't work.

It's all Bill Gates fault, that bastard. I blame him for all my computer problems... he is the root of all evil!!!

A Bonus...

I've waded through the process numerous times, overcoming unforeseen difficulties with odd programs and glitches nearly every time, and I constantly get "un-networked" by the addition of nearly ANY piece of hardware or software it seems. Just NOT worth the effort really...I just forward back and forth to whatever puter has whatever I want nowadays. You're not alone, believe me. I have friends who are military engineers who curse the damn setup and fail as often as they succeed in maintaining it. Q

OK OK, I'll admit it... The main reason we want a network is for games... How childish etc. but I still wanna kick my friend's arses at Need For Speed!
