Adam Yauch, a member of the seminal hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, has died. He was 47 years old.

The Brooklyn-born musician known to fans as MCA was first treated for a cancerous growths in his parotid gland and a lymph node in 2009 and subsequently underwent surgery and radiation therapy, which forced the delay of the Beastie Boys’ most recent album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. His illness has also kept the group off the road, and Yauch missed the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two weeks ago.

Yikes! Too young.

I remember hearing "Cookie Puss" years ago on a college radio station (in uncensored form - see below!) and thinking "WTF is this shit and who the fuck are these guys?".

It's been two weeks, and I didn't want to say anything in the beginning. I'm still saddened by the news. I must have played every Beastie Boys record at least twice. And to think, with the drinking and smoking music artists do, his cancer had nothing to do with that. A rare glandular cancer in his neck; dead at 47. Damn. I remember how my friend 1st in high school introduced me to them. She was such a huge fan, and I had the biggest crush on her, so that's how I started listening to Paul's Boutique - best pandering I ever did to get a girl. But man, such a visionary mind, a great talent. He made young people of my generation give a shit about things like freedom in Tibet. I know I'll be honoring his memory every time I listen to Beastie tracks, which is often. If his death is what it takes to introduce the young'uns to how real hip-hop started, then maybe they will honor him too.

I'm not in touch with a lot of friends from back in the day, so really didn't have anyone to talk to about this tragic new. It felt good to vent. RIP MCA
