What is everyone's all time favorite TV show, and who was your favorite character on the show, and why. When I say all time, it can be a current show, one currently in reruns but that has been cancelled, or one not on the air anymore.
My all time favorite TV show was "Dallas". It was on from the time I was eight, in 1978, until I was 21, in May 1991. It currently can be seen on digital cable's Soap Opera Network. I dont watch it much anymore, but have seen all 356 episodes in either first run or re run. Iam currently a member of a Dallas forum board that is part of a larger soap opera forum board.
My favorite character on the show was Bobby Ewing. He was handsome, rich, got all the girls, was very likable, and got to be in relationships with Victoria Principal, Priscilla Presley, and Sheree Wilson. Who could ask for more? In addition, he drove my all time favorite type of car, the Mercedes SL convertible. In short, except for being unlucky in love, and having to deal with old evil JR, he had it made. I dont wish for his luck in love, or to have to deal with a brother like JR, but I still liked his character, and how he conducted himself.
So, that is it. Looking forward to the replies. Thanks.

I've never liked Dallas. The theme music is cool though. 😛

I don't watch a lot of TV, but I do have two shows that I'd have to list as my all-time favorites. The Andy Griffith Show is one show I love to watch. It's very funny, I've seen most of its episodes (some of them multiple times), and my favorite character on it is Barney Fife (of course). 😀 The other show is Three's Company. Yeah, I know it's dumb 😛, but it's hilarious, I've also seen most of its eps, and Jack Tripper is my fav. char. (RIP John Ritter 🙁). There are other programs I like to watch on occasion but those are my picks.

Comedies!

Dude! It's all about "Seinfeld". Krammer rocks!
...of course Dr. Cox from "Scrubbs" may be able to give him a run for his money.

the andy griffith show hands down still funny today. and barney fife made that show, his facial expressions were great . also married with children favorite character there would have to be poor old al himself. its like that theme from john boy and billy about the married man

married man married man
drives around in a mini van (not al)
has a wife, has some kids.
now his life is on the skids.

The original Hollywood Squares with Paul Lynde in the center

Peter Marshall: Paul, what's one of the first questions a child will ask about sex?
Paul Lynde: Where can I get some?

Peter Marshall: Paul, in what state was Abraham Lincoln born?
Paul Lynde: Stark Naked.

Peter Marshall: Paul, what do "dual purpose" cows give us, that regular cows don't?
Paul Lynde: They give you milk AND cookies....but I don't recommend the cook-kies.

My favorite show is more recent.
I used to love the A-Team when I was younger.
Now its....
FAMILY GUY!!
Stewie is da man.
Close 2nd is the BBC Series Blackadder. All parts but 3rd and 4th mostly.
Rowan Atkisonson is a GENIUS!

Hey, Charley Weaver was no slouch either.

Peter Marshall: How high do you have to be to parachute-jump from a plane?
Charley Weaver: About three days of steady drinking should do it.

I always thought Twin Peaks was a great show, with Agent Dale Cooper playing the lead (forget the actor's name, lol) 😀

Six Feet Under, with character Nate as lead was a favorite too.

Agent Dale Cooper was played by Kyle MacLachlan.

Anyway, I like the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It's a tie between Stephen Colbert and Rob Corddry as to which anchor I prefer most....

I forgot about the A-Team! Great show, I've seen just about every episode of it. A perfect blend of action and comedy. B.A. rules! 😀 And M*A*S*H, the perfect blend of comedy and drama, is another favorite of mine. Hawkeye's my fave in that one. 😛

Another favorite show of mine was SOAP. Favorite character was Chester Tate, played by Robert Mandan.

Queer as Folk. Fav character was "Brian Kinney" played by Gale Howard.

Runner up: "Dream Team"

I'm torn....

Up until a few years ago, WKRP was numero uno in my book. "As God as my witness I thought turkeys could fly" OMG...I'm dying laughing just remembering it. And my favorite character was Andy Travis, the program director, because he was a really hot cowboy with really great hair and nice nice butt. I'm all about hair and butts.

Then along came Sports Night, a short lived but absolutely BRILLIANT half hour show (HBO I think?) about the cast and crew of a sports magazine show. Quite possibly the most intelligent and clever show ever, whether you're a sports fan or not. My favorite character there...I think Dana (played by Felicity Huffman, currently of Desperate Housewives) because she was smart and sexy and yet still somehow completely nuts.

M*A*S*H, the perfect blend of comedy and drama, is another favorite of mine. Hawkeye's my fave in that one. 😛[/QUOTE]

How could anybody leave out M*A*S*H.

One of my favorites was "The White Shadow". It went over alot of issues that teens in those day were facing but it blended some reality into it as well. Most of the charactars came from working class families and therefore didn't always have the economic means to counter the problem they were encountering. I would venture to say that it was true with alot of people in reality. Also, it tought you a little street smarts, which, in my opinion is more important than book smarts any day of the week.

These days, I don't watch that much TV.

My all time favorite tv show is Highlander. I just loved the concept of living forever and the issues that arose from it. And I love sword fights. My favorite character is Methos, the oldest immortal, a 5000 year old guy who doesn't have all the answers.

You guys, and gals, made reference to some great old shows that I was suprised to see mentioned in this thread. I agree that WKRP was a classic. The Thankgiving episode was arguably the best episode. I liked Johnny Fever from that show.

Soap was another good one. The character of Chester reminds me too much of my brother. I used to laugh about Burt's zany antics on that show.

I can't believe someone mentioned "The White Shadow." I remember that show very well. It was sort of ahead of its time. Here's some useless trivia -as good as it was, it only lasted for 54 episodes. They always cancel good shows like that one, while crap like "Who's The Boss" go on forever. Anyway, I liked the character of Salami on TWS, played by one of the Van Pattens.

Of course, it's hard not to mention MASH in a thread like this. Hawkeye is the obvious choice, but I liked Trapper John. Wayne Rogers was a dumb ass for leaving the show so soon.

They'll never make a show as good as "Hill Street Blues" again. I liked the JD LaRue character because he was flawed but overcame his problems before our very eyes. But he was still kind of a jerk, like most people you meet in the real world.

If I had to list one as an absolute favorite, it would have to be "All In The Family".

This was the kind of background I could clearly relate to, and it debuted at a time when CBS was running shows that no one in the US could possibly relate to, no moonshine running, tattered, "Deliverance" type family lived in Beverly Hills, no one had a pig who could predict the weather, and there could be no whitebread family in the length and breadth of America as boring as Uncle Charlie and Steve Douglas and his three (or four, or five) sons.

It was so different, so radically new. It was like my family, in the place where my family and I lived, discussing topical subjects, yelling and screaming at each other, all the bigotry and ignorance, and the immorality. "All In The Family" was a great show...and over the years, it got even better and better, until it became a national institution. I remember how I felt when I saw the living room set in the Smithsonian, right down to Archie's beer can on the coffee table. Wow, it's come to this.

I could talk TV shows all day. But this was the one.

hmm I have 3 recent; House, The Shield and Deadwood - Al is the man. Then 1 clasic would have to be Married with children, just the name Bundy cracks me up. Polk high school rushing champ lol

*hitting self in head* I cant believe I forgot Mash, I still watch it everyday on the Hallmark channel. MASH is definately one of those I enjoy wathcing to this day.
And for the person who talkd about SportsNight, If its the one Im thinking of.. the one with the lady that now currently is on Desperate Housewives it started on ABC and yes it was a good show, cut off too soon I think.
As for Cable type shows I always liked Arli$$ was good as was the Gary Shandling Show.

Thanks everyone. This is turning out to be a great thread. It is appreciated.

some great shows here! I'd completely forgotten about Paul Lynde on Hollywod Squares, WKRP, and Soap (my favorite was Benson).

Back in the day I liked Barney Miller. I liked Barney and Detrick the most.

More recently I really like the show Coupling on BBC. My favorite character was Jeff. One scene he did still makes me laugh to think about. He shows up in a pub to ask his friends for advice. He's swallowed the handcuff key after chaining his girlfriend to the bed. He's snuck out to get various drug store items to help him pass the key. The funniest part was that he's shown up at this pub full of people wearing a black leather hooded mask (super kinky looking) and he has completly forgotten he's wearing it.

It's a good topic, Mitch, thanks for starting the thread. Reading through all the posts I've noticed that many of the shows mentioned are from past decades. I'm not saying all of the current TV programs are bad (there are some good ones, I just don't watch them) but it's interesting to note. Maybe there should be less "reality" TV and more "quality" shows that focus on comedy and drama. 🙄

Also there have been some shows mentioned which I like but just don't watch as much, so I didn't list them as my favorites. But good TV all the same. 🙂
