Annoying/bemusing fashion trends

Hello there. 🙂

OK, so they don’t have to be fashion trends per se, but I was wondering what sartorial styles/traits, ‘looks’, outfits – maybe even particular items of clothing, I dunno – people struggle to get on board with.

For instance, one thing that’s been bugging me recently – and I don’t know why it bothers me so much, cos it’s not as if I’m passionate about clothes, particularly – is when people wear ties that are exactly the same colour as their shirt. I mean, a tie is supposed to add something to an outfit, is it not? It serves no practical function. So if it’s exactly the same colour as the shirt underneath, and the style is plain – no pattern/motif – what exactly is it adding? Once you’ve discerned it (cos it’s camouflaged, obviously lol), what is one meant to be admiring? The shape of it? The knot? (“Ooh, check out the half-windsor on that! What a beauty!” lol). I don’t get it.

A couple of other things come to mind, but I thought I’d throw it open to the forum at this point.

Cheeyers!

I don't get the "man bun". Full disclosure, my own haircut is pretty lame, so I'm not trying to be critical, I just don't get why it's so popular lately.

I do not get the "lumbersexual" thing where a guy dresses up as a lumberjack, grows a beard and acts all outdoorsy while you know damn well he's never intentionally gone off trail into the woods, ever.

I don't get the huge earrings I've seen men wearing; not the kind that dangle from the ear, the ones that are mounted in the earlobe. I don't understand why anyone would want those huge holes in their ears.

Hopefully this only exists in Wisconsin, but people wearing a sweatshirt with shorts, or socks with sandals or God forbid both at the same time. Why??? :facepalm2:

Basically all of the above, and I'd like to add Crocs and skinny jeans. Also...if you sag while wearing skinny jeans, you should probably just kill yourself.

Agreed. And, weirdly, the smaller the “bun”, the more ridiculous it looks, in my opinion. If a guy has genuinely long hair, I tend to think fair enough – you’ve gotta do something with it if you don’t want it down, after all. But the style where it’s short at the sides and then there’s the longish bit in the middle, with the teensy tiny topknot… I really don’t know what that’s about.

lol I’d never heard this term before. Made me chuckle! Sounds like it should describe someone who gets wood over – erm – wood. :flatstare:

I dunno. I’d rather look like a ‘lumbersexual’ than a conventional metrosexual, I think. Maybe it’s a look one should have to earn, though. Like you have to chop down a big ol’ tree with an axe before you’re awarded your ‘lumbersexual permit’ (and plaid flannel shirt, of course).

Handlebar moustaches, talon fingernails, and sharpie eyebrows,

Agree with you on the nails and eyebrows. In fact, long nails – pointy or not – creep me out a little. I don’t mind a handlebar moustache. If they’re just slightly upturned at the ends I think they look alright. But if they’re excessively ‘twiddly’… not so much. lol

Yeah… Not sure about that look myself.

lol Harsh.

Baseball caps turned sideways. The brim is to keep the sun out of your eyes. I even understand turning it straight backward. But sideways? Come on, looks like you're waiting for the short bus!
