Any members have an AMD athlon computer? How much better is it from an Intel pentium 4 computer? 😀

Depends on many factors, including what you actually want to do with the processor, what models of each processor you are referring to, and what board you're running them off.

Generally speaking, Intel is better at general tasks due to pure speed ( and is better at compiling, compressing etc ). AMDs are usually better under stress, particularly the larger bus models, and hence are good for gaming and other heavy-load operations.

I'd be using an AMD athlon 64 (if thats the latest AMD computer) for websurfing, creating artwork with Photoshop, creating tickling clips, viewing tickling clips, instant messaging etc... I would probably have a virtual desktop or 2 running and more than 1 program running a well. Thanks for replying Anti-social.😀

Most Intel CPUs employ a technique called Hyper-Threading which speeds up running more than one program at once, which AMD's CPU's currently lack. The flip side is that Athlon 64s tend to be faster at running one particular program at a time.

Of course these are all generalisations; it completely depends on what particular programs you're running, and your list is so wide-ranging I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference overall between competitive models from the two manufacturers. In your situation I'd just go for whichever gives you the best deal for you money.

Rajee, to simply put it, once you put in your 64, you will never want to go back to an intel. You will notice a significant difference in your performance. Especially with photoshop. The hyper threading? Don't need it. AMD was designed for multitasking!

One thing people fall for is belief in the myth that a higher gigahertz means a faster computer. That's why AMD is thought by "non-computer people" to be a slower processor. The truth is that most of AMD's processors are hovering around 2-3 gigahertz while intel is nearing 4. In almost every benchmark I've seen, though, AMD beats out intel. They handle data in completely different ways.

Alright, I'm going to be quiet before I start drawing ASCII chip diagrams for comparison. 😛

Anyways, I recently upgraded from an intel 2.4 gigahertz P4 to a 2.2 gigahertz 3500 athlon 64, and there is no comparison. The intel is blown out of the water, dragged to land, then shot repeatedly! Don't worry, it won't let you down! Good luck!
