Any dialect of chinese works. Except i'll ask the answering party to answer this: The chinese really believe in ancestor worship don't they? Am I wrong in my memory?

What i need is what is ancestor in Chinese? Like what is the english word ancestor translate to?

The reason i ask is i'm writing a novel and this is one of the best ideas that came to me on how i might, if i need to, name my countries or families, as in what would their proper title be, not just family cause that sounds too plain for sci-fi. Thanx to anyone who responds.

I will gladly join your hunt, as I wish to speak chinese too. Oh.....

To the best of my knowledge, zu zong is Chinese for "lineage" or "ancestors." I think that SyDemon speaks Chinese, so you might want to send him a PM about it (though he may not be able to reply right away).

I know a bit of chinese, though not very much. (I have a bit of asian heritage in me) I'm more used to writing the chinese characters, though, not as used to typing out chinse words based on how they sound. I'm not fluent, either.

I believe "ancestor" is Zŭxiān and I believe it's pronounced "cho sian". This is the translation for Mandarin. I'm not so sure about the cantonese translation. You don't need to trust my judgement because like I said before, i'm not fluent in Chinsese. However, my understanding is that Zŭxiān is the closest translation to 'ancestor'.
