So like since the beginning of August i've been having this feeling in the middle of my back on either side of my spine. It's like a feeling that i'm aware of my muscles or whatever it is, and it doesn't hurt or anything until 3 days ago. 3 days ago i got this pain in the right side of my middle back which came and went like in 10 seconds. And it has come back like 10 more times since. Kinda weird, but i keep thinking well maybe it's just mucles and i would hate to feel stupid if i go to a doctor they take a piss test or a blood test and cna't find crap.

The facts that i know: My blazer (truck) had a metal crosspiece in the seat which lightly dug into my back, but i got rid of that truck around september ish and didn't drive it more than twice a week anyhow.

I sat on my duff playing daoc from may thru august like 7 hours a day, yeah stupid huh?

And about 3-5 days ago i got a membership to the Y which could have caused this pain (maybe my lungs finally getting some work ; )

What do you all think and if any of you is a doctor nurse what do you really think i should do? I don't wanna be a hypochondriac, but i always hear about so and so died cause he found out about X disease too late for them to be able to do crap for him/her and it's not that i'm afraid of dying it's that i don't have time to be sick.

being the offspring of doctors who taught me a thing or two, i think i can offer some advice
***I MYSELF AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFFESIONAL OUTSIDE OF CPR AND FIELD DRESSINGS/FIRST AID; THESE ARE ONLY IDEAS***

1- it may be a cramp, see a chiropractor
2- do you lift weights or do a physically intense job of any kind that requires bending over? that could be a plausable cause
3- If it is truely a muscle ache that is the problem, i would recommend you ask your doctor about BIOFREEZE. it is a menthoyl based pain reliver (like icy-hot patch) but even more potent and faster working( i use it after PT sometimes), and the strong menthoyl will clear your nose REALLY quick during allergy season trust me.
4- the worst thing it could be is a pinched nerve in your spine, which depending on the severity, may require surgery

If you dont want to spend a fortune to find out what's up, go to a medical center or health clinic, they are usually cheaper, and sometimes, depending on your age and lots of other complicated bureucratic jargon, insurance might cover it entirely (depending on your insurance as well)

Being a guy of huge size and stature, back pains are nothing unfamiliar to me. XD

Before I can begin to answer it, just one question I have...

Is it a sharp pain or aching pain?

An aching pain could be a result of you sitting on your duff, or as Otaku stated, a pinched nerve.

If it's a sharp pain, it could be something slightly more serious, like a tiny fracture/chip of the lower vertibre. My brother had a hairline fracture in the vertibre 3rd from the hip (can't remember if it has a name). When he had an X-Ray, the fracture barely showed up, but it was there, and it caused him a bit of discomfort.

My Advice: No matter what, the safest option would be to get it checked by a fully trained medical professional. Better safe than sorry. 😛

Whoa...ok, everyone slow down!!!

Hi, I'm Camel, resident Student Physical Therapist. DO NOT GO TO THE CHIROPRACTOR!!! Although they will put you back in alignment, they do not show you how to keep everything in place through proper exercise. Take a few Aleves or Ibuprofen and see how you feel. If that doesn't help, or doesn't help enough, talk to your doctor about Physical Therapy. Not only will the PT help figure out exactly what is wrong, but they will show you exercises to keep you from reinjuring it.

GO GET A PRESCRIPTION FOR PT!!! Unless your state/insurance has direct access, then just go see the PT...for real...

I had something similar to that, about a year ago like i would be sitting there and all of a sudden there would be a pain on both sides of my spine for like 10 seconds and it would be like a throbbing sensation and it would like make me almost paralized for a few seconds, but it never stayed for more than ten, i went to a doctor and he said it was like floating kidnies or something and that it would go away...i never did anything about it and it hasnt happened in like 8 months so im hoping its gone now, but this is from personal experience i dont know the first thing about medical anything, im just a stupid 18 year old struggeling through every day life. but yeah theres my 2 cents.

Well it's not bones i know that, it's in the tissue on either side of my spine both muscles or whatever, think symmetry here.

Is it a sharp pain or aching pain?

No, it's not a sharp pain, it's not a stubbed toe pain, it's not a hangnail or headache, it's a sudden rising the pain receptors on only the muscle or tissue or whatever on my right side of my middle back that comes and goes like in 10 seconds. And it doesn't hurt real bad, but it's like an ouch then it goes away.

not a cramp, i've had those.
I don't lift weights, but i do lift boxes of bananas, course i've been doing that since mid september and this is now the end of october when this shit started up, and the feeling in my back (not the pain one) related or not (to the pain one) has been coming and going since like august 1.

It's just weird cause like i could feel the muscles or tissue or whatever the hell it was and then that feeling would go away and then sometimes i'd get just for a few seconds a numb feeling and that'd go away (almost always quickly) and i sat on my duff from mid may till like august 23rd when i went back to school cause the writing major didn't produce a job. So i was on my butt most of every day for the better part of 4 months and so that's my thinking is something about sitting so much, but at 24?....seems just silly and i was ignoring it until i got this pang of pain in my back and then i'm like hmmm okay what's this? I'm feeling really good aside from all that, so i know it can't be like cancer or something really bad. I mean like i can oggle the girls and all that so i'm not dead yet : P

I'm not a physician, but a clinical pharmacist. If Aleve/Motrin helps, then you have some muscles issues that may either require PT/OT or time to recover/repair. IF not, then see your regular doc, you may need a referal to and ortho doc.

*grins* I think I know what's going on.

Try lying down (be sure you are comfortable) and doing some relaxation exercises. Try to "feel" every part of yoru body from your feet to your head. When you get to your back, focus on the sensation and see if you can pinpoint it. I can't tell you how it will look... everyones perception of their body is different. When you find it, try thinking it away- if it's a cramp or muscle soreness, visualize it being massaged and vibrated with heat to soothe it away. If it's a small tear in the muscle, picture it slowly knitting back together.

Sounds stupid, I know, but your mind has incredible power over your body. Try this for a few days, but be SURE you are relaxed and can do this without being distrubed.

If, after no more than a week, this doesn't help, go to a DOCTOR. Get him to look at it. There are nerves that spread from the spinal cord around you back and sides... if one of them (or even the spinal cord itself) got pinched it could cause this pain. That oculd be serious. It could even be something as (relatively) simple as a slipped disk. Not hard to fix, but delicate.

Also, if the pain is in any way connected to a specific movement, try to do the "mirror" of that movement to try and streatch out the afflicted area.

great, thanx!!! it does suck being only 24 and already as like most of you i have injuries that possibly could plague me to the day i die, but if i ever get good insurance.... : P
