Thanks for posting this, Bugman. Was a little too young to remember this flight, but shortly after like Tom Hanks I developed a little-boy fascination with the space program, such that every Christmas I'd look forward to a bunch of NASA-themed gifts and toys under the tree.

Yes, and it came on the heels of the Apollo 1 tragedy (on my dad's birthday, no less), so this was a particular triumph. And it wasn't until the Internet that I discovered the answer to the riddle that had plagued me since I was a kid: why the numbered Apollo missions jumped from 1 to 8.
