a small vent here so be patient..when i take the time to view a clip...look at an art drawing..or read a story...and then when i show my appreciation by posting how much i enjoyed the clip..admired the artist..praised the author..i believe..and maybe it's just me..but i believe the originator of that clip, artwork, or story should acknowledge the poster..even if it's a simple thank you..when i wrote my stories, i never failed to thank the poster...to me it shows proper etiquette..i take time to not just post a simple good job..but to make each post my true feelings of that clip, drawing or story..there are those of you who always answer back..i don't know...i just think that it shows a wee bit of rudeness not do to so..but hey what do i know..

LittleBigHead is one who never fails to post back to those fans of his..and there are others besides..he makes you feel that your posts mean something to him...

i realize that everyone has lives to lead..and i understand of course..i'm just airing a wee grievance..

Thank you, Izzy! Indeed, I always appreciate it when my replies are individually acknowledged... it's simple good courtesy, and a contributor should allow for such consideration as part of his contribution scheduling. A group thanks is better than none at all, but separate acknowledgment is ideal... the writer understands fully that he hasn't wasted his time with a thoughtful response. While such consideration will steal a certain amount of time away from an artist/author's creative pursuits, acknowledgment needn't be excessive, just as long as it's heartfelt and on-target. Many replies are sufficiently detailed and insightful that they qualify as creative contributions all on their own... one shouldn't deny them their due any more than they'd ignore the work originally prompting the words of praise.

It's just common courtesy, which is, sad to say, not as common as it used to be...

Excellent post, Izzy. I'll keep what you've pointed out in mind.

Kyhawkeye - sad but largely true (with rare and noteworthy exceptions).

well not all my threads are silly and dippy ya know 😉

but those threads i do start for fun are meant to be just that...fun..nothing else..

and yes common courtesy...a dying emotion i'm afraid..

Well, whenever someone posts in one of my stories, I tend to thank them for it. Any kind of constructive feedback is enjoyable and I enjoy when people enjoy what I wrote. I cherish each and every reader and, should they leave a comment, I cherish it even more. Of course I'll thank them for it.

Well the thing is...sometimes people just don't have much to say. Sometimes they can't go in great depth about everything they like about it. Not everyone wants to. You can't really fault people for that...

no no..the person who originally posted the drawing, clip or story...sorry if i didn't make myself clearer on that..

If someone says:

"ok"

"nice"

or

"cool"

I would not reply to them for that. Too many people consider something like that to be an appropriate comment on a work of creative endeavour. It isn't. It's a cop-out.

Perhaps if people beyond other artists and writers felt like giving GOOD comments, more people would be the sugary-sweet Hallmark Holiday Special brand of polite that you wish for, Izzo. That means giving more than just a few cheap words. Other artists and writers do really well, though I seldom see clip producers come out of their sections.

As for videos... what the Hell do you want us to say? I give comments on my opinion of a style, an artist or writer's skill level so that I may give them tips, pointers, ideas on how to improve. These people will listen. Clip producers for the very large majority don't care about your opinion unless you buy it. This is flawed of course, they should listen actively and take to heart the useful things that non-buyers say due to the fact that doing so may make turn those people from non-buyers into buyers.

You'll probably say I'm biased due to that last observation because I've never bought a video.

i find that producers of clips actually appreciate posts from females especially..and most know that i cannot purchase these clips..i'm not asking for hall mark sugary crap..just a simple acknowledgement would be nice..and i don't know enough personally about such things to make a suggestion..unless it's a story..since i did write a few in my brief but glorious past, i feel that i can make constructive criticism..and i never say just nice job..

another nickname i see..izzo...

It's Hallmark. One word, not two.

You don't. Quite a few people DO. Too many people do.

Och, aye!

There are some people that don't take advantage of the "subscription" function or sometimes in a thread continuing to say "thank you" to everyone can get monotonous, so most will do a general one to everyone that responded in the thread. Most people do have lives and maybe miss the post or are just too busy. Those that post a lot of content like MTJPub for instance, might not be able to read everything. But I'm sure the gratitude is still there.

If you're posting work and expect praise of your audience...you're probably missing the point. An artist works not to bring life to the masses but to their own heart. Praise, fame, fortune, etc... they're just byproducts and just as fleeting. Today you may be praised as a charasmatic genious. Tommorrow you'll probably not as much as raise an eyebrow. Art is always a matter of persepective and let's face it, cattering to the masses is the last thing any artist would want to do. To be bound by expectation. Chained. Creativity destroyed. And for what? People who could no less care about your life as they do any other?

Why not create because you wanted to change yourself? Express your feelings in a median that neither words nor any other form of communication can come close to explaining. Why not it's message a secret? To confond and ponder everyone else but you? Your efforts are only wasted...if you allow it to fade.

So in essence...don't bring down the artists.

I agree with you Izzy. Good job. It also is a bitc* to take a good portion of the day in which you don't have and write a story for the forum that 208 people view but 2 people respond to. I realize now why so many people are lurkers. Izzy of course had her normal kind words and thanks to Demonic Angel for her comments. I know it certainly makes me hesitatant to take that kind of time when you're busy in business to write when there is very little appreciation. For those of you I have not responded to I apologize and that will change.

I disagree with The Judge. EVERY SINGLE YEAR there are statistics that support the #1 reason why employees, athletes, and all people perform is for "The appreciation of a job well done". We can say we don't care about the appreciation but we'd be lying if we said it. If we appreciate something...we should say it. If not...let it go. A lack of an appreciative response is the assumption that people didn't like it. I don't think that's always the case.

Off the soapbox and back to work.

Bill

Well what happens when the only thing you can think to say is well nothing or good job and what if you hated the story but don't want to hurt the author's feelings?

Well said Isabeau!

Artists and writers specifically put a lot of time and effort into making their pictures and stories and one of the pleasures of sharing them AT ALL is that they get the feedback from other people. If no appreciation is shown, the feeling that "people read my stuff and maybe acknowledge it..." appears alongside with the thought "why am I posting these things here if nobody seems to care enough to let me know they enjoyed the story... or the picture".

I myself don't always respond to things that I liked, but I try to take some time to write something - even if it's not much, when something drew my attention.

To be honest, if you like someone's work, let them know. Because without it they might just stop, thinking that nobody cares much about it anyway. I think almost all of us do the drawings and stories posted here free of charge, you don't have to pay anything for them... so a little note of appreciation (when you appreciated something) should definitely not be that much to ask.

But maybe that's juts my opinion. 😉

When I post a story I look at 2 things.

(1) number of viewers, hoping that at least 2/3 of them read it
(2) number of responses

The only way I know how well my work comes out are the responses. I know of several how have or are considering stopping with their contributions due to lack of responses, which is a HUGE loss for us.
