This is the Reader's Digest version, and a lot of little things have been left out, but here goes...(deeeeep breath)
The Jedi started out as scholars and teachers, but eventually learned the arts of defense as well, becoming the galaxy's gaurdians. The history is murky, but there was a great rift between Light and Dark Jedi about 5,000 years proir to "A New Hope". After a hundred years of fighting, the defeated Dark Jedi took their battered ships into exile, and into what was then unknown space.
Much of the galaxy at that time was uncharted and safe hyperspace lanes were always sought after. Slipping away, the Dark Jedi found a primitive civilization...the Sith. The Jedi were revered as gods due to their unexplainable powers, and the Sith were utterly dominated. They built an empire far away from the Republic and after millenia, their original home was forgotten and maps lost to time. The Sith race were practicing their own alchemy and "dark magic" and this was incorporated into the Dark Jedi's Force use.
At this time, a brother and sister team named Gav and Jori Daragon were down on their luck Space mappers with Force sensitivity, but no desire to train. They had a way of "spinning the dials" and seeing where they wound up, selling the new coordinates. Bankrupt, they stole their own ship from impound and headed out one last time in hopes of striking a goldmine of routes to pay off their debts.
They showed up at a bad time on the Sith homeworld. The greatest Lord, Marka Ragnos, had died...sparking a civil war between two factions. The two strongest leaders, Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh engaged in a bloody duel at the doorstep of Ragnos's tomb. Sadow was insistant that new worlds must be conquered and more secrets uncovered in the Force. Kressh believed that things should stay as they were and the Sith be made stronger. Gav and Jori's ship flew overhead. They were captured as enemy spies.
The Dark Lords remembered little of the distant Republic. The conservative Kressh thought them precursors to an invasion, while Sadow saw the Republic as a whole new region to conquer. He belived that a war against a common enemy could bring the Sith together.
A tribunal of Sith Lords sentenced Gav and Jori to death, but Sadow helped Gav escape, leaving behind "evidence" that Republic spies had freed him. At the next Sith council meeting, Sadow exploited fears and doubts about the Republic and used Gav and Jori as scapegoats to galvanize the factions. He insisted that the Sith must strike the Republic to survive. Sadow was initiating the naive Gav in the ways of Sith Force-use and alchemy, keeping his sister and him apart. Jori demanded their ship back, as the coordinates stored there were thier only way home. Sadow kept making excuses for keeping her brother and the ship at his fortress, and Jori soon doubted that Sadow was an ally.
Ludo Kressh uncovered evidence that Sadow had been behind the prisoner's escape, and gathered loyal Sith forces to raid Sadow's fortress and expose him. Sadow expected this and it was part of his plan. He convinced Jori that she needed to use her ship to reach the Republic, arranging at the last moment for Gav to not be able to join her.
With her gone, Sadow unleashed all of his hidden forces and crushed Kressh's army and ships and took the throne of the Sith Empire. Jori's ship, of course, had a homing beacon that led Sadow's forces into the heart of the Republic, starting the Great Hyperspace War.
There is a lot more to this, but this is how the Sith began. The original species known as the Sith have been lost to time and the term came into it's current meaning...any Jedi delving into the ancient Sith forms of Force-Use, a cult dedicated to the Dark Side. Many Jedi fall or are tempted by the Dark Side, but to truly become a Sith, one must accept and follow the Code handed down from Master to Apprentice since the Golden Age of the Sith.
