This is not intended to spark a debate about birth control, so I ask we keep that topic in P&R where it belongs.

This teacher displayed incredibly poor judgement, but I can't see how locking her up for a year or two at taxpayer expense in already crowded state jails is in anyone's interest. She does need to face some consequences and will likely lose her teaching certificate, and that, with probation and possibly a fine would seem to be enough.

Interesting, however, you know what is going to happen here soon enough. I could see if suggested the kid go to planned parenthood or something. Giving the kid the drug was not a good move. I'm thinking lock up is extreme, a fine and probation seems reasonable although I don't know all the facts.

Thanks,
K

I agree... This teacher is not a parent or legal guardian of the 16 year old, and some form of punishment - should, be carried out.

We think the teacher's to blame here? All she did was help someone who needed her. If this girl could have gone to her parents, this would never have been an issue. Shame on the girl for being irresponsible in the first place and then betraying the one person who was there for her.

Oh, there is plenty of "blame" to go around here, including the student, the young man involved, and possibly her parents. We have no idea what kind of parents they are afterall. And lets face it, most 16 year olds make poor decisions about certain things. Hormones and all that. That said, the teacher (who is 32 and probably should have known better) demonstrated poor judgement and violated Texas state law by providing the pill.

Pretty much... But you have to remember how backwards a lot of our society still is about birth control.

At the same time, this is just another case of "no good deed goes unpunished."

I'm glad I'm not a teacher, but if I was, I'd just follow protocol and inform her parents without doing anything else, since legally, you're not really allowed to do much else.

In our neighborhood............................

A local college is dispensing this pill via a vending machine, and causing quite a controversy.

"Here you go, sweetie. You just take this and everything will be OK. You don't have to worry about any consequences of having underage sex with whatever scumbag catches your attention. I've got plenty of these, so you just come see me whenever you need to. Life is too short to spend any of it in a vertical position."

>>The arrest warrant said the student and her boyfriend gave Steinberg money for the pills. <<

Uh. One can be convinced they are trying to be "responsible." Perhaps this is all Prussian Slip.

Is that pill, blue or red? I'm with your argument...

The youth in Americana, is stupid... Why ask them to reach for a higher standard? Especially, when they don't even know what standards are...

In my highschool they had a vending machine in the washroom that gave out condoms. I don;t see this as a huge deal. Legally the teacher shouldn't have gotten her the pills, but it hardly deserves a prison sentence. Of course, this is also Texas, the most ass backwards state in the US, so it is to be expected.

You're right, a little tough love is what's called for here. Let her pop out a kid like you and she would have sealed her legs shut with surgical staples and a soldering iron.

Why would you assume that kid would be anything like me? I'm not the father. Instead of spewing your trademark sophomoric drivel, I recommend a quick trip to the Emerald City to stock up on grey matter, and then using it to work on supporting your position on this Austin case. It could really use it.

You know, giving a 16 year old girl an oral contraceptive isn't exactly like giving her Advil or Tylenol. There are numerous studies that link birth control with memory loss, bone loss, prostate cancer, and other serious side effects, particularly with younger females. Here are some examples.

Sorry to bust your bright pink bubble there, but it's not just some harmless pill to make troubles magically go away. It's dangerous business that should most definitely involve the parents if it's to be considered at all. I hope that teacher is blacklisted against any potential employment that puts her within a hundred feet of teenage girls.

Half of the articles on here don't even directly source medical literature, instead sourcing things like the Toronto Sun and Vancouver Sun. This is aside from the source itself not being an unbiased information repository.

Teenagers make stupid mistakes, and not everyone's parents are understanding. It's not up to a parent whether or not a teenager has to go through with a pregnancy, and teenagers do have rights when it comes to their bodies and what happens to them.

Because all girls who get pregnant and want to use the morning after pill are dirty sluts that should just keep their legs closed, right? You're a terrible human being, and I hope this realization comes upon you someday.

Oh boy...

What, you got something against Canadian News sources? There is plenty more literature out there. I chose this page because it shows several different examples. Feel free to offer refuting documentation if you don't believe it. And even IF only half of them were true, that still enough to support my original point, that it's something far to serious for any teacher to indiscriminately pass out to her students.

Oh, I see. The parent is responsible to make certain the teenager is sheltered, fed, and clothed; and they're responsible for any legal fines the teenagers might incur. They are required to provide medical care for their teenagers. They are responsible for virtually all other medical decisions regarding their teenagers.

But when it comes to sexual indiscretion, parents are suddenly absolved of any responsibility? They have no authority to make medical decisions? Does anybody outside of Planned Parenthood think this is a good policy?

Because all girls who get pregnant and want to use the morning after pill are dirty sluts that should just keep their legs closed, right?
If that's what you believe, I guess I can't change your mind. But that sounds a little harsh to me. My criticism was more toward the teacher than the girl.

Oops. Somebody forgot to take his Midol! :laughhard: :bwahaha:

How about you show some actual credible medical studies so we can actually have something of substance to debate about?

What magical world do you live in where all parents are responsible and caring? You don't see a very conservative parent disowning a daughter because she got pregnant? Because I do. I had friends with parents that would have tossed them onto the street or sent them to boarding school if they had ever known they were having sex, let alone had an abortion.

Teenagers have rights when it comes to their bodies, as well as rights to medical confidentiality with a doctor.

If that's what you believe, I guess I can't change your mind. But that sounds a little harsh to me. My criticism was more toward the teacher than the girl.

Bullshit. You were calling the girl in question a slut and the teacher an enabler of sluttiness. You have no idea what the intentions or motivations of the teacher in question were, or the circumstances of the girl who got the pill from her, and you're an asshole for inventing motivations for them in an effort to slut-shame them.

Seriously:
You don't have to worry about any consequences of having underage sex with whatever scumbag catches your attention.
