Avast Antivirus Question-Important

I was hoping that perhaps a forum member would have information about Avast antivirus. This is the situation:

I had a version of Avast that was installed in 2008, after my computer had an adware virus. I had to re register the system, to receive updates, which I did once a year.

Today, I received a pop up window, offering me a new version of free Avast. The old version of Avast used to scan my computer for viruses, every time the computer went into screensaver. If a virus was found, it would remove it.

Today, I downloaded the new version of Avast that I was offered. The message I got said that the download was successful, and that my system is secured. Yet, my computer is not going into screensaver at all, and is not doing any virus scans. I used to be able to get it to go into screensaver, and start the virus scan, by clicking Power options, and then the computer would go into screensaver after about 10 or 15 minutes and start scanning. Tonight, that did not happen. While it says my computer is protected, I'm worried that it isnt doing virus scans.

If anyone has any information about what to do, it would be appreciated. I plan to contact Avast, to ask them as well.

Thanks.,

Mitch

Something completely weird happened.

Since the computer wasn't going into screensaver, and doing it's antivirus scan, I unplugged it last night, and then plugged it back in this morning. When I did, the virus scan started, when the computer went into screensaver, like it normally does. On the old version of Avast, the virus scanner used to scan thirty to forty thousand files, and then said it gave a clean scan. Today, the scan went up to 90,000 files, and at that point, a red screen came on, as happens when a virus is detected. Usually, when that happens, and I push the mouse to go back online, it will give me a message in big letters that a virus has been found, and then tell me to move it to the chest. This time, no such message came, so I dont know whats going on, or what to do. I emailed Avast again, to see if they have any advice.

This is all very confusing. When I put my arrow to the Avast orange ball at the bottom of my toolbar, it says my system is secured, but I'm not sure what to think.

If anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

It might possibly be you have your system restore on. When system restore is on many virus programs can scan that area but if anything is detected it cant be quartined since that area of the drive is protected. This happened to me once I had to undo system restore get rid of all the viruses then reset the system restore option. Before I did that the virus kept reappearing even when I did not go back on the internet.

Thanks for the advice, kurch, but after I posted this, I realized something.

It used to be that the Avast icon, including the virus scanner, was navy. When I downloaded the new version, the Avast ball icon on my toolbar, turned to orange. Now, when the computer goes into screensaver, and the virus checker starts scanning files, the virus checker starts out with a blue color scanner, and then at some point turns to orange, as it is conducting a more extensive scan. Apparently, that is just the new scanner color, and everything is fine, because no viruses have been detected. I was worried for nothing, lol.

I appreciate your advice. I will keep close watch on this situation. Thanks, pal.
