This is more of a general issue than one with the forum.

I can't seem to play an avi file. I loaded the latest DIVX on to my computer and it still dosen't play in my quicktime player.

any help?

You're trying to play it in Quicktime? Do you own a Mac? If you run Windows XP and have installed the latest DIVX codec then try opening the file in Windows Media Player.

If you have a Mac then I will have to do some research. I don't know if Quicktime can play AVI files, no matter the codec (DIVX is not the only user of the AVI format). If the above fails on Windows try downloading GSpot from this link: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/GSpot270a.zip Unzip the folder and look for a .exe file. If you drag the clip to the .exe file GSpot will open and analyze the clip, reporting to you if you have the right codec installed or not.

Thank you, HDS, as always, for your help.

I don't own a MAC, but I was actually able to run lots of other files (avi included) in my old version of quicktime a few years ago, which is why I figured that would be the solution now...After what you just told me, I am really wondering how the hell I was able to!:shake:

To be honest, though, it did crash after about a year when I started getting pop-up messages telling me that certain applications were getting messed up with quicktime and other programs. Being the proactive genius I was, I just let it go on like that and hoped for the best.😀

However, I digress.

I made this post in haste and panic. Basically, I figured that some major issue was on the horizon so I began looking for major technical issues.

Oddly enough, just after making this thread, I decided to go back to the file and open it with WMV on a lark, just to see what would happen...It worked.

I think my biggest problem with computers is that I completely over estimate the stupidity of software. If something dosen't work I either figure that several major downloads are in order, or that I royally fucked my comp up somehow. I never start with the simple and go from there.

I still thank you for taking the time to help, Shadowman.:couch:

i play all my clips using realplayer if that helps try that

I'm one of those "let the chips fall where they may" type of people.

If the clip is in WMV by default, I keep it there. If it is in realtime, I do the same. I'm not really picky. Though, personally, I kind of prefer WMV.

I notice a lot of clips these days are played on the windows media viewer than realtime. When I first started downloading clips in 2000, it was almost exclusively realtime.
