Ross's father happened to be in the area while Ross was down in OKC.
Ross arranged to have an early lunch with his father, and then to head to the office.
Ross never felt truly comfortable with his father due to their difficult relationship.
While Ross was at the lunch, Ross's hands started shaking, and he dumped an iced tea on the table, where his father's wallet, cell phone, and things were, and his father seemed annoyed.
When Ross's father asked "How's Kayley?:"
Ross said "I walked out Dad. Kayley cheated on me" Without saying "The person she cheated with was a woman" because he felt the sex life part was none of his father's business.
Ross's father clearly always had a better relationship with Ross's father's wife's children than he did with Ross. Ross had battled with his father for years, but, when Ross's father had been seriously ill with an infection that almost killed Ross's father earlier that year, Ross became very upset, and decided that he had to "Take a deep breath, cut the family BS, and be a bigger man, and deal with family members Ross had never gotten along with, to give Ross's father peace in Ross's father's final years.
The men hugged goodbye, and Ross would see his father the following week in NY at a family party Ross had promised to attend.
Ross's mind was just racing. He knew that the "Right thing" would be to stay over one or two days, calm down, and go home and face Kayley. The problem was. Ross was so angry and hurt by what Kayley did, and was not sure that he wanted to lose her, that he was fearful Kayley would say "Fuck this ranting husband of 25 years. I can divorce him, get a nice settlement, not have to deal with BS and go off and live happily ever after with Alexandra. " Ross could always find a woman as well, but, it would almost be "hollow" Ross's history degree from college had taught him that "History meant everything. Ross's life had been with Kayley, and no matter whom he met, he would spend the rest of his life thinking of Kayley"
After a day of trying to accomplish something, Ross went back to the hotel, and called Kayley.
"Hello" Kayley said in a cold tone of voice.
"Kayley, are you going to leave me?" Ross asked.
"I'm still here, Ross. You are the one who stormed out. I am right here, in the apartment. I have not started packing to go anywhere with Alexandra, or seen a lawyer. I told you that I think we should talk, and you ran away. Usually you face things head on. This is so unlike you. Why did you do that?" Kayley asked.
"Kayley, it is because I am , so , so hurt that you love someone else besides me. Maybe you could see it from my point of view. If I had told you I fucked Alicia and loved her, you know that you would have been at a divorce lawyer the next day. I have not done anything, and just ran. I want to come home and talk to you, but, I just cant face you now. I dont want to be away from you for a long time. I just need some time " Ross said.
"Okay, then how about we do this. I know that this is a major situation. Yet, we have agreed that we dont want to split up, and that we want to talk. So, how about you just treat this as a normal business trip. Spend a week in OKC. Talk to some investors , do what you normally do. I will tell Alexandra that you and I are both very upset, and that I promised you I would not see or talk to her until you and I talk. If she does not like it, let her go away. It will be far easier to deal with, then the only man I've loved for 25 years going away for good, okay?" Kayley said.
"Fine. We dont have to talk every day. I will call you the day before I come home, and let you know when I do. Its Monday now, so figure this will be a usual trip and I will be home Thursday, Friday or Saturday, okay?" Ross said.
"Just fine. I still love you from the bottom of my heart, even though I know I;ve hurt you to the core of your soul" Kayley said.
"I love you from the bottom of my heart too, teacher, which is why this was so difficult for me. Okay, so fine, I will talk to you in a few days" Ross said, hanging up.
Ross sighed and tried to calm down. Ross called Fritz. "Mister P. I talked to Kayley. We agreed I am just going to treat this as a normal business trip of several days, and when it is over, I will go home and talk to Kayley. I've calmed down, so, for the good of you, Steve, and myself, how about I come into the office tomorrow, we talk about deals like we usually do, and try to put together an investor list, and even one show before I leave, how does that sound?" Ross asked.
"Just fine, partner, see you at the office in the morning" Fritz said.
Ross went to sleep, and slept decently.
The next morning, Ross dressed and went to the office.
"Good morning, Steve, Mister P" Ross said in a chipper tone.
"You seem calmed down. Okay, so how about this. I have a list here of a thousand names of good potential investors. We will tell them that we want to talk to them ASAP and show them the wells, but that we have to do it this week because one of our partners, you of course, live in New York, and you must be back there within a week. Worst case, I'm sure we can show to fifty to one hundred people, maybe more" Fritz said.
"Just fine" Ross said.
Steve and Fritz started calling people, while Ross, due to his stutter, got on to the computer and sent out hundreds of emails that were in form letter.
By the end of the day, one thousand people had been contacted, a major amount of contacts, and two hundred fifty agreed to be shown the wells, so, the next day, buses would shuttle the investors to the wells, while Fritz , Steve and Ross went out in an Uber SUV. After the show, would come the lecture, and then hopefully, some contracts would be asked for.
The following day, Ross , Steve and Fritz went to the fields, and met with the investors, with the field people lecturing on the usual investment, time potential , etc.
Of the two hundred fifty, seventy five committed to sign, with another twenty five "maybes:" asking for contracts, not bad, not great, just "fair"
At that point, Ross had been in OKC for three days, it was now coming up to Thursday.
"Are you ready to call Kayley and go home?" Fritz asked.
"Tomorrow, I need one more day" Ross said.
On Friday, Ross , Steve and Fritz called up John Fish. They discussed the potential Anchorage deal. Ross told John that Ross was very tired due to his condition, and running RossShell, and that flying to Anchorage would be very difficult if not impossible for Ross. The men agreed to get on the phone with a conference call to the people in Anchorage, and if all went well, John, Fritz, Steve, one of, two of, or all three would go there, and Ross would join in from New York.
On Friday evening, Ross called Kayley.
"If you want me to, I can take a midnight flight, and be home in the morning. If I'm too tired to talk, I will sleep in the den, and then we will talk when I';m awake" Ross said.
"Ross, you dont have to sleep in the den. Come and sleep in our bed. Just treat it as if you're coming home to sleep because you had a long business trip, and are very tired. We will talk over the weekend. We have three days due to the federal holiday and me not having to work on Monday. You dont have to go into the office , only if you want to " Kayley said.
"Let's see what happens" Ross said.
Ross flew all night from OKC to JFK. The flight got in at 6 am, Ross took an Uber home, and went in the elevator up to the apartment.
As Ross unlocked the door, even though he was coming home from a business trip to his wife of 25 years, this morning was anything but Ross coming home from a routine business trip after what had happened with Kayley and Alexandra the previous week.
What would happen when Ross and Kayley finally talked?
That would be seen.
