Very interesting, Relent. Not at all what I had imagined. You brought tickling much more into the open of the world rather than it being some shameful thing corrupting our good old morals. The combination of paganism and Victorian settings is also quite intriguing. Due to the Romantic obsessions of the time, I don't think it odd that the town could become enamored with a pantheon. Or, that this is an alternate reality where paganism became universally en vogue. Although, which is it here? Is AG an isolated pagan haven, or is this a pagan world?
I think the tickling as a Romantic obsession is also a pretty good concept. I think you captured the spirit of the time quite well, and twisted it to your use. I really like your "world" section. I'm a bit less certain about your ethereal trinity. As I understand it, the categories are broadly:
-tactile/economic (I want my skin to be soft and sensitive, and will spend accordingly),
-Religious/poetic (less certain of the specifics here, but I think I understand the romantic poetry aspect)
-Scientific/philosophical (experiments, pursuit of truth and knowledge in a time when these categories are blurred into one)
I find the third category very interesting. Since this is a time when phrenology (head-bump-science) was popular and evolution was barely understood, I think this idea perfectly fits the setting. I think there's a lot of ways to merge the concept of the scientific pursuit of knowledge, the poetic search for beauty, and the philosophical search for truth all in your "sedative" category.
But in general, I don't like the nomenclature. I'm hesitant for us to be bogged down in terminology created on the spot. But I think the concepts behind them are good. This is a time of growing urbanism and industrialization. Peasants are coming in from the country, and I think the pagan aspects can tie in there. What traditions and superstitions do these new residents bring? Not so much in gods and spirits, but maybe flesh out the workers' ethos.
There's a lot here, and it's an interesting world. I find myself hard pressed to come up with a character now, there's so many possibilities. A passionate scientist trying to develop a theory? A poetic noble with wealth to burn? A newly urbanized peasant desperate for work? There's a lot here. Bully for you, Relent!
