In 1815 an American fleet secured the release of European slaves from the
Barbary corsairs.
England followed securing the release of 357 Neapolitan and Sicilian slaves through
ransom.
Many stories were published describing tortures and hardships suffered by those
released.
The main punishment being the bastinado (whipping the soles of the feet), but also
such things as crucifixion and burning at the stake.
In 1816 Britain attacked the harbor at Algeirs forcing the release of 1642 christian slaves.
In this group was a serving girl to a wealthy Neapolitan woman. She would go on to
describe serving as a slave in a “seraglio”
Christian women captured by the Barbary pirates, unlike male captives, did not publish
their stories due to the fact that many had been dishonored by service in the “harems’.
The nameless girl went on to describe harem life, in great detail.
They were treated fairly well and rarely, if ever, beaten.
They would bathe daily and were largely left to there own devices.
Sex between the women was commonplace with the older more experienced
women using the younger women.
Sometimes the women were brought before more than 1 male and were expected to
please them all.
The girl describes a device the “ Bey” had for use in private.
It was called the “mares tale”. The girl would be placed prone before a padded bench
and forced to kneel. She would be secured to the bench with her wrists down by her sides
and her knees bent , legs spread, and ankles secured in a raised position.
In this way the girls favors could be enjoyed by as many as 3 men at once.
She goes on to say that the “ Bey” was very fond of titillating his captives feet when
placed in this device.
