i can't imagine this coming up, but if your life rested on the outcome of a baseball game to be played this week, who would you choose as your starting pitcher(provided he had as much at stake as you)? my friend and i had this arguement the other day and he told me my choice was crazy. i won't tell who i chose lest i color someone's opinion. not now anyway

Sorry not to have a more informed opinion on this, but I quit watching when they went on strike. Lets see... if I had to choose, I'd pick the one that makes the most money. At least he was smart enough to find the best representation.

If I could pick anyone? Sandy Koufax. If it had to be a current player? Pedro Martinez. He'd be 13-2 with a 2.42 ERA if his bullpen didn't blow so many of his leads.

Current players? Martinez is a strong choice. But so would be Arizona's Schilling or the Giant's Schmidt.

All-timers? Although he never got to show it much for a winner, I'd give the ball to Nolan Ryan in a heartbeat. NOTHING ever phased that guy...

i guess i should reveal my choice now, the one that got me so much ridicule. that would be-kevin brown. best era in either league this year, a career era under 2.00 against the atlanta braves, and this guy has not one nerve in his body. he would have 20 wins already this year if the dodgers would, oh i don't know, maybe score some runs? crazy, but i've seen it work. kevin brown should be a first-ballot hall-of-famer. unfortunately, he has pitched on some terrible teams. sorry to vent, but i've been on a rant since he had the cy young award stolen from him in 1997 by john smoltz. hall of fame induction from now on is probably going to require 250+ wins, which he should have. ps-notice how many 'ace' pitchers are struggling since the inception of ques-tec?

again, sorry to ramble. this came up at a bar the other day, and i thought it a pretty interesting question. maybe a better one would be 'how can i get some girls to let me tickle them?'

If it's played with National League rules, I choose Babe Ruth. If not, gotta be Sandy Koufax.

Ahhhh..! The "thinking man" chimes in with a post. No DH?! Brilliant strategy, terorizer!

Hehe, gotta figure the Bambino gives me a chance to with the arm and the bat. :- )

well, yeah, except i said the game was now, with current players. that rules out the babe and koufax. sabatthia? joke, right?

Ok, Iam a baseball buff myself, so I have to do this by time period. If my life rested on the outcome of a game now, I would want Pedro Martinez as my starter. If say, the game were played in the early to mid 90s, I would have chosen Greg Maddux, due to his four Cy youngs in a row, and dominance in that time. In the late 80s, I would have chosen Orel Hershiser of the Dodgers, around 84 to 85 Dwight Gooden, and in the Mid to late 70s either Nolan Ryan or Tom Seaver, due to their overpowering fastballs at that time. If you are asking about a game being played today, I would have to answer Pedro Martinwz.

Of all time, Sandy Koufax as he was in 1962-1966.

He led the league (NL) in ERA for those five consecutive years, which no other pitcher has done, before or since.

In the same period, he was healthy enough to pitch for the whole season in 1963, 1965, and 1966. In those years, he led the league in wins and strikeouts also, and the Dodgers won three NL Pennants and two World Championships.

Your not exactly endearing yourself to me

He should beware the wrath of a Cleveland Indians fan scorned. Although I root for the Dodgers, I can appreciate your loyalty to your team.

You tell him, L.O.!

well, cc DID make a nice play last night, perventing himself from getting de-crapatated. kevin brown won last night, despite the most bone-headed play i've seen in the outfield since jose canseco had the ball bounce off his head over the wall for a home run. come to think of it, that might explain a lot about him. as far as incurring wrath from an indians fan, dude i grew up in boston rooting for you-know-whom. wanna talk wrath?

pedro would be fine-as long as he hadn't already won his 20 games and 'shut it down'(actual quote). i see him up close and personal(i live 1 mile from fenway) and he is great when he wants to be. i'll take the guy gary sheffield is terrified of. i think back to the '97 world series(sorry limeoutsider) when kevin brown refused to come out of a game. can't imagine pedro caring that much.

Top vote getters seem to be Sandy Koufax (alltime) and Kevin Brown (current). Can't see myself EVER puttin' one of them two f*****g Dodgers on the mound! Let alone "bulldog" Hershiser...

Yeah, I'm a Giants fan. Wanna talk about pain? I was 6 stinkin' outs away from seein' 'em win their first ever Series in my lifetime last year...

What, me bitter?!

🙂

Jason Schmidt of the Giants...he is on fire this year!
