I was thinking about this question today.. in regard to.. athletes, but,,. it could apply to newscasters.. or radio hosts, etc.
Is it better to be.. a big fish in a small pond.. IE Small market team or such... or a smaller fish in a bigger pond?
Case in point..
Baseball.
Chipper Jones played his whole career in Atlanta.. He will undoubtedly be in the Hall of Fame someday. Even in spite of his injuries.. he had a great career.
Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Both played for the massive market team of them all, the Yankees, their whole careers. Both will be in the Hall of Fame, and both complied, massive numbers, even in the bright lights of NY.
As most baseball fans know, Chipper used to feast on the Mets, compiling huge numbers against them.
Chipper's long time team mate, Hall of Famer, 300 winner Tom Glavine, had both experiences, compiling over 240 wins for the Braves, but still winning his 300th game with the Mets, and playing in NY for five years.
News Casters.
Jim Gardner is THE MAN in Philadelphia, as WPVI has been the number one station in Philly for decades.
In the early 1980s, Gardner was offered the anchor position held by the late Bill Beutal at WABC TV here in
NY. After discussing it with his family, Gardner didnt take the job due to family concerns. Mr Gardner was only in his mid 30s then, so one has to wonder whether he would have been the legend in NY, that he is in Philadelphia.
Anyhow, thats the topic. Is it better to be a superstar.. in Atlanta, or Philadelphia.. or.. be a less known name, in the bigger pond of NY.
Thoughts?
