Recently our family cat of seventeen years passedaway. I would never have thought such a small little cat could leave such a big hole in our lives.

Anyone else felt this way or did we spoil her.

I know how you feel. I have always had pets in my life. They are family members. They have their own feelings and idiosyncrasies. When you have that personality in your life for a long time its normal to have that bond established.

This past Summer my cat of 14 years passed on. I really know how it feels. It does help to get another cat, not immediately but when it feels appropriate. I have two other cats but I always remember my Foxy-chan.

My heartfelt sympathies to you and yours...people who have pets understand that losing a pet IS losing a member of the family. You care for/are cared for by said pet...and both invest time, energy, and love into one another.

People without pets just don't get it.

I agree with FeatherDaemon's sentiment...getting a new pet is definitely helpful...just not until you are ready and it feels right.

Grieve however you need to grieve...this is a loss, and should be mourned as such.

Again, my deepest sympathies for your loss.

Hmmm...There was a cat of a few months that died in my family. everyone else was remorseful but me oddly. Of course, I wasn't a very friendly individual when it came to my feline friends. But I thik it most certainly had to do with the fact that I knew a week before anything strange started up, that it was going to die. And how it would die. Wierd I know. But meh, some people say animals are thoughtless. I say nay. Grieve if you must. But death is only the beginning.

you should have titled this differently as i thought you were talking about space..sorry..

and no you didn't do anything wrong..of course it's a big hole..i know exactly how you feel...two of my precious cats have died during our marriage..both lived long lives..when they died, i was devastated...sad for weeks..to me it's like losing a member of the family...after Stevie died, four years ago, i said no more..i can't take it..mom had just died also.. Stevie was 18..she lived a long life with us and is now buried out back..but a month later, we got Chelsea..i can't live without a cat in my life..she is my baby...the center of our home..

get another but when you feel you can...the new pet won't replace the hole left in your heart..the new pet will help you heal that hole..

my sympathies...feel free to pm me...

My sincerest condolences, Meteor. I know from losing long-beloved pets, from my first parakeet to my last girlfriend's cat.

It's totally normal in my experience. From what I can gather from other people, as well as my own experience, it's a very normal (albeit unpleasant) way to be after a close pet dies.
