my blackout story
Shortly after 4pm on Thursday, I was right here at my computer. When the power went off, I had the presence of mind to save what I was doing (on battery power) and implement a normal shutdown. I called my neighbor, Bob, down the hall, and verified that his electricity was out also, so it wasn't a problem in just my apartment. (What an understatement that turned out to be.)
I heard on the transistor radio that it was an extensive blackout, and I filled three bottles (one liter each) with water. No way of telling how full the water tank on the roof is at any given time, and the pump that fills it when it gets below a certain level is an electric pump. But I didn't feel like going down 7 flights to buy more batteries or candles, as I would have had to walk back up.
So I just read, by daylight and later by candle light, listened to the radio, and went to sleep early (at 10:30pm). I hoped the power would be back by the time I awakened. Sadly, I got up at 3am, hot and sweaty with no AC, and the power was still out. When I got up again at 7am, I had electricity, but no cable TV or cable modem connection, so I surmised that some of NYC (including some Time Warner Cable facilities) was still without power.
Scheduled to go to Connecticut for the CAT gathering, I could not reach the Avis office by phone. Local phone service seemed to be out, and I couldn't find out if they were open and could honor my reservation.
So I took a chance, packed, and walked to the Avis office, 76th Street and Broadway. They were open, and I got the car (a Chevrolet Malibu with about 6,000 miles on it).
Ghastly traffic on the way there--it took three and a half hours to get there. By comparison, the drive back to NYC Sunday morning with little traffic took just two hours. It was a very nice gathering, but that is in a different thread in the Tickling Discussion forum:

Glad to find all services restored here when we got back.
