I guess the recent series of events should act to remind us what's really important in life. Now, if only we'd listen!

Hey come on!!!!.........

.....the worlds only " Super power", get a grip for crying out loud!

Where were YOU when the lights went out?

I, as per usual, was seated in front of my trusty computer, when my monitor blinked out, and my tensor lamp dimmed. "Aha! Rolling brownout" I thoght, since the day was hot, and I figured most folks were running their AC's, and L.I.P.A. (Long Island Power Authority) was having trouble keeping up. Then everything went dark. "No problem" I thought. I'd seen this before, and power was usually restored after 20 minutes or so. Not this time! I was wihout electricity from about 4:00 P.M. yesterday (8/14) til about 3:30 today. My main concern was that our food would go bad, but keeping the refrigerator and freezer doors shut helped keep them cold, and I think they are O.K. I hope everyone else got through all right.

hey double, here in Southern CT I was without power for about 6 hours only, faired pretty good...glad to here most of our East Coast friends are ok.

If you think it's bad right now, wait till 2012! 🙄

Who's gonna referee THAT one??? 😱 I think Mills Lane might be tempted to take it.

my blackout story

Shortly after 4pm on Thursday, I was right here at my computer. When the power went off, I had the presence of mind to save what I was doing (on battery power) and implement a normal shutdown. I called my neighbor, Bob, down the hall, and verified that his electricity was out also, so it wasn't a problem in just my apartment. (What an understatement that turned out to be.)

I heard on the transistor radio that it was an extensive blackout, and I filled three bottles (one liter each) with water. No way of telling how full the water tank on the roof is at any given time, and the pump that fills it when it gets below a certain level is an electric pump. But I didn't feel like going down 7 flights to buy more batteries or candles, as I would have had to walk back up.

So I just read, by daylight and later by candle light, listened to the radio, and went to sleep early (at 10:30pm). I hoped the power would be back by the time I awakened. Sadly, I got up at 3am, hot and sweaty with no AC, and the power was still out. When I got up again at 7am, I had electricity, but no cable TV or cable modem connection, so I surmised that some of NYC (including some Time Warner Cable facilities) was still without power.

Scheduled to go to Connecticut for the CAT gathering, I could not reach the Avis office by phone. Local phone service seemed to be out, and I couldn't find out if they were open and could honor my reservation.

So I took a chance, packed, and walked to the Avis office, 76th Street and Broadway. They were open, and I got the car (a Chevrolet Malibu with about 6,000 miles on it).

Ghastly traffic on the way there--it took three and a half hours to get there. By comparison, the drive back to NYC Sunday morning with little traffic took just two hours. It was a very nice gathering, but that is in a different thread in the Tickling Discussion forum:

Glad to find all services restored here when we got back.

Mighty glad to hear that life wasn't interrupted too bad Mil.🙂 Hope you enjoyed the gathering.🙂

Thanks, Big Jim, I did indeed enjoy the gathering. 😀 I've edited in a link to the thread describing it above.

I've heard some say that we'll see a baby boom from this multi-state blackout. Lights go out. Not much else to do, I guess. We didn't get hit by the blackout here in Maryland, but I remember quite well being without power for 4 days from freezing rain last December. I thought I had good diversity of power, as our furnace burns oil. But I found out the hard way that the blower still needs electricity to work. Even worse, I'm on a well and yes, you guessed it--The water pump needs electricity too. No heat. No water. Plus I had the flue. Not fun, but we survived. 🙂

Nine months after the 1965 blackout in NY, there were reports that the birthrate was 33% above normal for that week. Later, some said that this was just an urban legend, and there was no real increase.

So let's keep an eye on the news in the week including May 14, 2004. 😀

peaceful

I loved it, ya know with all the bad stuff aside. It was quiet where i lived. Kind alooked like a horrow movie scenerio. Nice and dark..yeah..
