I went to the eye Dr today, for the first time in many years. The news wasnt good.

I've always known I had no central vision in my right eye. I was born with it. Today I found out that my eye is actually much worse than originally thought. Essentially, according to the Dr, I am blind in my right eye. I also have a condition called lazy eye, which causes my right eye to drift to the side.

I am going to need reading and other glasses. Also, while they can do nothing for the blindness in my right eye. The Dr said any surgery for that is experimental, and very dangerous, he did say that I can have surgery to have the lazy eye/drifting eye corrected. The news upset me, My dad was calm, taking the attitude of "Theres nothing we can do, so why get hysterical over it" As much as I miss my mom, I'm relieved she wasnt around to hear this. She would have been very upset.

So, within a week, I start wearing two pairs of glasses. One for watching TV, and the other for reading. I dont know when the surgery is, but I do know its outpatient. I may just ask my dad and Cheryl if I can sleep over their place for a night. I think I will have blurred vision and have to wear dark glasses or a patch for 24 hrs.

So, thats my news.

Sorry to hear. Do some research on the matter and the doctors to make sure everybody involved knows what they are doing.

Good luck.

Thanks.

I have a problem in that I have no medical insurance at the moment. I'm working on getting it. I believe my dad is paying for the Dr visit, but I can reimburse him when I sell my mom's posessions.

I've been thinking about getting a second opinion. I guess I'll probably have the surgery, even though its more cosmetic than anything else.

Mitch

I must ask though...why get the cosmetic surgery if it's seemed to never bother you before? Or did I read that wrong?

I definitely reccomend staying at a love ones house after the surgery. I had PRK surgery done on both eyes and WHOOOO HOOOOO! Was I in a world of hurt after. Couldn't see. Light hurt my eyes. Felt like pieces of fiber glass were left inside.

Definitely get a second opinion.

It's not so much cosmetic if done at the right time. Correcting the lazy eye would have been the good thing to do when you were a kid, as your binocular vision would still be developing, but now? I can't say I know the benefits it would provide an adult, especially with no medical insurance. Just be wary. Yes, it's outpatient surgery, but the change in vision will make you nauseous and uncomfortable for a few days.

GQ, I''d get the cosmetic surgery because when my eye drifts, it looks like I'm not looking someone in the eye with the right eye. I've had people comment to me about that before. This would correct that.

Flat, the Dr said the surgery could improve my side vision. About the medical insurance... I'm working on getting that, and. while I shouldnt post this, because of how I've been made fun of in the past.. my dad is insisting that if
I want the procedure, to get it, and he'll pay for it. We had, shall I say, an honest discussion about our past problems, this past weekend, including his bitching about my mom's alimony. I told him to let it go, and that shes dead, and he promised he would.

I'm not sure when I'm getting the surgery. I did have some procedcure on the eye when I was about 2, but over the years, things must have just gotten worse.

Mitch

As Leo said, do the research. As flatfoot said (at least I think so) weigh the benefit over the consequences of the surgery. You do those things and you'll get the best answer that works for you.

Now for this.....

.....We had, shall I say, an honest discussion about our past problems, this past weekend, including his bitching about my mom's alimony. I told him to let it go, and that shes dead, and he promised he would.
Mitch

That is the best thing I've seen you say in years! Keep it short and to the point and eventually he'll get the message. Remember he picked her so.......

Good job.......:bowing::yayzorz:

Thanks, kis. I will do the research, and weigh the benefit.

I'm glad you approve of what I said to my father. I'm hoping he lets it go about my mom. His wife royally pissed me off last night, wanting to know why I'm not looking for a job. Like its any of her business. He told me I'm an adult, and to do what I want.

Bottom line, I'm exhausted. Between the years of taking care of my mom, running to Drs with her, packing the house, etc. I vowed before I got up here that I was going to give myself 30-45 days before job hunting. That doesnt mean I'm not working. I'm doing what I always have done, selling antiques and jewelry. Additionally, I presented two new business proposals to my dad on Tuesday, that I want to meet with lawyers about.

So far, Cheryl and I have had no problems, but, if shes going to judge me about how I live my life, we will. I'm hopeful that doesnt happen.

Sorry to digress off topic.

I know this is an old thread, but rather than starting a new one, I figured I'd bump it, as I have more info.

I went to the eye Dr/surgeon yesterday. I now have three pairs of glasses, for reading, distance, and sun.

The Dr said I was born with what is called a macular cyst on my right eye, which is what causes the no central vision issue.

The Dr does want to do surgery to correct the lazy eye. He says it is either outpatient, or a one night hospital stay. I probably cant work or be on the computer for 3-4 days after the operation, as I have to wear dark glasses.

I'm not 100% sure when the operation is. It will probably be fairly soon. I was told I have to go for a physical first.

Mitch

Sorry to hear this my friend. As Leo said I would do some more research before going ahead.

always, as a matter of course, get a second opinion before surgery. Youd be amazed at just how often a second doctor will have a completely opposite opinion.

Thanks, danny.

Thanks kurch.

Thanks, Jeff. I have heard this from two Drs already, the regular eye Dr, and the surgeon., Ironically, the guy that did the original surgery on my cross eye, when I was two, is still practicing. I have to look if hes here or in DC.

I also keep wondering what my mom would advise me to do if she was still here. My dad thinks I should have the surgery, because the cross eye looks terrible. When I'm very tired, my right eye drifts where it doesnt look like I'm looking someone right in the eye.

I will do more research before just going in.

Mitch

Eye disorders are particularly nasty. I've got my fingers crossed for you, Mitch.
