I was wondering if any of you know somebody that has gone blind later in life. Im trying to help my sister. Her husband (a man I love dearly) is going blind due to complications with his diabetes. He has limited sight right now and will be completely blind in a matter of months. They are VERY low income and he wont be able to work very soon. As it is he can barely work but his job (a feed store) has promised he will always have a job with them. My sister is trying to get a caretaking possition. My brother-in-law is a very proud man. He loves to build things and that has been the hardest thing for him to loose the ability to do so far. He has up till now not allowed my sister to work because "the man takes care of his wife". He has since told her its time for her to work because he knows he cant much longer. The fact that he admitted that was huge! When he is considerd legally blind I'm going to be helping them get SSI benifits with the state (I have experience with disability benifits with my son). But what we need is ideas for jobs he can do. He wants to have a job. We just dont know whats available for people in his condition. My sister is completely overwhelmed with all she has to do that I have taken on some of the responsiblity for her. Any help would be greatly appreiciated!:grouphug:

By the way.... I was also wanting to know about how to get a service dog. Matt is only 26. He needs to be able to walk and stay active to help his circulation. The diabetes is causing other problems in his feet and toes and I think a service dog would really be benificial for him!

Anna thats so sad,i'm sorry to hear that.As far as jobs i would check with the state employment comission to see what they offer in the way of training for disabled people.I admire your brother-in-law for wanting to keep working despite his problems.Hmmm a serivce dog. There are bound to be some non profit groups around that could help with that although if you don't live near a larger city it might be harder to find one.Non profits can often help with job training and other matters as they adjust to his condition.I need to give this some more thought, and i'm sure there are some others who can offer suggestions.

Start here Anna. The place is in LA but perhaps they can advise you further.

My dad has slowly been losing his site for the past 3 or 4 years due to Malocular Degeneration. One of the reasons I quit my job and am trying to start a business at home. Good Luck. I will keep you, Matt, and his wife in my prayers.

Anna 6-9. my heart goes out to you and your family. i pray for Matt and his wife. You were inquiring about a seeing eye dog. i don't know if this will help but hopefully it will http://www.seeingeye.org/default.aspx and again i say. God be with Matt and hs Wife.

how horrible. but how wonderful you are trying to help them out. i don't have any resources right now but i'd search the internet and also his doctors should have some resources as well. i'd be very suprised if they didn't. you and your family are in my thoughts and prayres.

Thanks for the well wishes Aurora! I know they could get information from his doctor but at this point Im just trying to show her that there is light at the end of the tunnel. My sister has been having panic attacks and is completely overwhelmed right now so Im doing what I can to help with info.

PS: Thanks guys for the web sites they have been a help I have found a School for service dogs in Oregon. Its probably a 4 hr drive but it will be worth it. Still looking for jobs he can learn tho.

Sorry, that's all I had to contribute to this thread. I apologize for the jackingness.

American Diabetes Association, you probably know...

There's diabetes in my family, and that's the scariest aspect.

If a very close relative didn't have adequate medical coverage, there would have been much more difficulty, to understate.

I hope this was not due to his not getting adequate medication/insulin due to a lack of health benefits...

If there is also great financial difficulty he may also be, now, eligible for medicare.... I really don't know, though I do know of a woman in her 30's being granted medicare, at least temporarily, due to a severe unidentified virus that almost killed her, landing her in the hospital for 2 weeks, all with no insurance...

I'm sure you've checked the American Diabetes Association webpage, many helpful links --- http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp
***There's also a search on the site for "LOCAL EVENTS AND INFORMATION," just in case --
you simply type in your zip code --

You and they are definitely in many thoughts and prayers

My thoughts & prayers r with u & your family. I had an aunt that had diabetes ( back in the mid, late 60's) She was legally blind by her early 30's. I remember what my mom went through. As a thought: there is a program, relatively new, I think, that's called "body talk". It has 2 do with the mind & body working together 4 healing purposes. I can't seem 2 find the booklet I had, but it might b something 2 check out, & not in a cure-all sense, but some ideas that might help. May good things happen!

i think your family may also benefit from some threapy or some support groups. it's a great way to connect with others who share your experience. i can't even imagine how hard this must be on all of you. just know that even though it feels like the end of the world at times you all will get through it.

As for jobs, phone work is easy enough. Even aside from telemarketing, he can work for a market research company where they do phone surveys with folks. That would require some computer work so he'd have to learn a braille keyboard first.

Then without any special equipment, he could do phone sex. I hope this doesn't offend, but if he's of an open mind he could make really good money doing that. The company to check with is Gayle Staffing. You can google them.

There are also QA jobs listening to customer service phone people.

Best of luck.

LMAO I was on the phone with my sister and read this to her. She got a HUGE kick out out of the phone sex idea! He would never do that but Jess thought it was a good idea. She says thanks to every one and their responses and prayers. Thanks for sticking up for me Bugman! Even though I know Viper was kidding and thats my way too. Make light and joking. No big deal.
