There's a great quote from History Boys that pretty much sums up what I look for in a book:

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours.”

Does anyone have any recommendations, preferably fiction, that's given them this kind of experience? I'm always looking for new things to read, even if they end up sitting on my shelf for a year before I get to them.

Might I recommend the Incarnations of Immortality series, by Piers Anthony? They're a little heavy in terms of reading, but they're amazing, if you're up to them! Lots of theological and philosophical ideas, a very in-depth plot, compelling characters... Overall an awesome read! There are seven of them in total, though, so make sure you've got the time... XD

Wow, these look really interesting. I've never been very consistent with finishing a series, but I'll certainly keep an eye out for these next time I'm browsing. I also didn't realize one of these was the basis for Dead Like Me.

can't go wrong with 1984 by Orwell.

Ooh, that's a good one! Always did love that one. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a good read, too. Lots of comparisons to draw between the two, as well.

I guess I've had my share of those moments when reading - but what exactly those feelings were and which books they came from I don't recall! lol

One thing I haven't experienced, which I know some people do, is reading a book and feeling that it is communicating to me on a very deep, personal level, if you see what I mean. I haven't read a book that I would describe as being anything close to life-changing, in other words. Whether that's something to do with me or I just haven't read the right book yet, I don't know. So I can't really recommend such a book, unfortunately.

Interesting thread, though!

Was given "God is a Bullet" by Boston Teran a few years back as a gift.

I guess you could pick that up on line for a couple of bucks- great read.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the sound of God is a Bullet, the description gives a bit of a True Detectives vibe, without Matthew McConaughey's weird existentialism of course. If anybody gets the chance to read Motherless Brooklyn, give it a go. It's pretty great.

Best book ever: The Kindly Ones, by Johnathan Littell~ It shook my world.
