This was, without a doubt, one of the three greatest college games I've ever seen in my lifetime. First, to adress the penalty...
It may have been questionable, but football is full of questionable calls. There were other, more minor, calls that went against Ohio. If you remember, even those complaining about the veracity of the "Interferance" call admit that it was at least a "Holding" infraction. Pretty much semantics at that point. The real point here is that Miami came into the game averaging 41 points a game. Had they been able to do that against that fantastic Ohio defense, they never would have been in that situation in the first place. In my opinion, Ohio simply played a better game overall, and fate played out. They deserved it.
So, how about Maurice Clarrett stripping the ball from the defender after a potential game-ending Miami interception! What a heads-up play from a guy who was in high-school this time last year.
The really cool thing is that I actually picked Ohio to win it in a pool that my friends and co-workers had going. Most thought I was nuts. Ohio stated that they were going to actually put the ball in Dorsey's hands and make him win the game...and they stuck to that plan. Without thier tremendous running game, Miami was a bit one-dimensional. However, the injury to McGahee was gruesome. I really wish they hadn't have shown it a second time. I really hope he can recover from it, he's got a very promising career. Far too often have we seen great college players miss out on a career due to injuries in Bowl games.
All in all, the game had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was a great spectacle to watch, and you could feel yourself being part of history. In a few years, when they make another of those "Greatest College Games" videos, this one will most assuredly be in the top 3 or so. It lived up to the hype, and there was no controversy over who should or shouldn't be there. Two unbeaten teams...offense vs. defense...all the makings of a true classic.
