Buckeyes Are National Champions!!!!

Except...

...How much did they pay that official to throw that flag 10 seconds after that last (or what should have been the last) play in the first overtime? First, the guy standing two feet away from the play emphatically signals incomplete...then after all the celebrations and fireworks have started, the doofus decides to call a bogus penalty. Even Dan Fouts was ripping that call on the air. Also, I noticed on ESPN.com that the official in question has caused the Big 12 (the conference he works in) to issue two formal apologies to teams which he blew calls against. This should be number three...
Although, having said that, I have to hand it to OSU. They came out and played a tough game on both sides of the ball...especially defense. Congrats...

O' what a night! That game was un-fucking-believable. I've long been sick of Miami winning national championships, and I'm really happy for Ohio State too. But note to all Ohio State fans: Michigan still owns you.

I believe the word you meant to use was owned Ultra. I think Michigan had better get used to being in second place as long as Coach Tressel is around. 😀

Oh, and Heeb, I agree with you. It was the wrong call. The call should have been holding on the defensive back, not pass interference. The defender held our reciever all the way up to the goal line, but then wasn't actually touching him when the pass was thrown. The proper call would have resulted in a first down with the ball in the same place anyway. I also found it interesting that the officials didn't make a single holding call on either team during the entire game until overtime, even though there was blatant holding on both sides. Perhaps they were instructed not to interfere with the flow of the game too much.

This was, without a doubt, one of the three greatest college games I've ever seen in my lifetime. First, to adress the penalty...

It may have been questionable, but football is full of questionable calls. There were other, more minor, calls that went against Ohio. If you remember, even those complaining about the veracity of the "Interferance" call admit that it was at least a "Holding" infraction. Pretty much semantics at that point. The real point here is that Miami came into the game averaging 41 points a game. Had they been able to do that against that fantastic Ohio defense, they never would have been in that situation in the first place. In my opinion, Ohio simply played a better game overall, and fate played out. They deserved it.

So, how about Maurice Clarrett stripping the ball from the defender after a potential game-ending Miami interception! What a heads-up play from a guy who was in high-school this time last year.

The really cool thing is that I actually picked Ohio to win it in a pool that my friends and co-workers had going. Most thought I was nuts. Ohio stated that they were going to actually put the ball in Dorsey's hands and make him win the game...and they stuck to that plan. Without thier tremendous running game, Miami was a bit one-dimensional. However, the injury to McGahee was gruesome. I really wish they hadn't have shown it a second time. I really hope he can recover from it, he's got a very promising career. Far too often have we seen great college players miss out on a career due to injuries in Bowl games.

All in all, the game had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was a great spectacle to watch, and you could feel yourself being part of history. In a few years, when they make another of those "Greatest College Games" videos, this one will most assuredly be in the top 3 or so. It lived up to the hype, and there was no controversy over who should or shouldn't be there. Two unbeaten teams...offense vs. defense...all the makings of a true classic.

Bella cabby-pants

Dudes, I live in Columbus, and I am so sick of the Buckeyes I could cry :cry1:. They won. Yay. At least no cars were set on fire downtown like when they lose 🙄 :scared: Seriously, I'm happy for everybody-except the clowns that run around squawking "WE WON!!!". Um, YOU didn't win, THEY won. YOU sat on your sofa with your buds and ate chips wearing your *&&&%! Brutus Buckeye hat😛

End of gripe, thank you😎

I guess McGahee's dreams of nfl in 2 years or this year if the right offer woulda came might be crushed dependin on the severity of the injury, im guessin he will need surgery, if u look u can see some huge bulge on the side of his knee, vicious hit. The entire miami offense got hurt(dorsey and McGahee), i was slightly pleased that the son of payton(RiP #34) got some time, im just enthused that Miami finally lost. JUST ALL OF YOU WAIT, 3-5 years, NIU huskies will be in the national title....hehe, my ncaa 2003 psx2 game proves that, 2 years of undefeatedness will do it!

There's no way UMich loses to OSU (or ND) in 2002 if they played up to 80% of their potential. But the most important thing is that Nebraska is still the last team to win back-2-back championships. Yay!

McGahee tore three ligaments in that knee. But apparently it's not as bad as it looked, given that he has a srong possibility to play again.

You Buckeyes are lucky you didn't play USC! Palmer was the one Heisman candidate in a BCS game who actually looked like he deserved the trophy. Good thing he got it!

OSU and Miami both played like they belonged in the big one, though...unlike the Cornhuskers last year.

McGahee's injury made me wonder again why these guys aren't getting getting paid. Millions of people were watching this game, I can't even imagine how much money was being generated by this telecast, and these guys were playing for, what...a college education? That's fine, but how much is that, 40 grand? The big time college football and basketball racket is an unbelievable cash cow for broadcast networks and advertisers. And considering all the weird restrictions and rules the NCAA puts on players and coaches while the sports bring in millions (or is it billions?) of dollars each year, it's a pretty hypocritical business too.

????????????
You don't think making a ticky-tack call on (what should have been) the final play of the national championship game not interfering? Especially, as you correctly pointed out, they chose to turn their heads to all of the stuff going on earlier in the game?

TK, a college education is alot. Plus im not sure if they said it was McGahee or someone else who was majorin in mollecular genetics as they gave a final question for the audience. I mean it shows they're not the stereotypical greedy dumb jocks(see: randy moss)

If they dont make it in football they have somethin potentially to fall back on. I mean i would love to get a full ride at college and not have student loans hounding me for the rest of my life. Also for big stars like McGahee, im sure he gets free medical care thru the university so he wont have to pay for surgery which also costs a pretty penny, free university merchandise and he is known nationwide and has a shot at playin in the NFL for money. So i think a college education is fair. If they get paid for football there, then why not pay the band and cheerleaders for performin or scholars for their achievements.

"..a college education is a lot.."

It certainly is. But is it enough? Hell, no! The players are generating untold amounts of money for Nike, Doritos, Addidas, Miller Beer, TV networks, and so on. As for paying the band and the cheerleaders, as much as I respect them they are not the ones generating the revenue. How much do you think a BCS Battle of the Marching Bands would draw?

For the record: I was a college music major and have no problem with the fact I wasn't paid for my concerts. But then I wasn't walking around with a big corporate logo on my tuxedo, doing prime time gigs on ABC!

These players, however, are being used to promote and sell things. I would have no problem at all with not paying the players if things were as they used to be many years ago, with scholar-athletes truly fitting that description, and college sports truly being local and university affairs. But things have changed drastically since those days. The money involved is huge beyond comprehension, and the athletes are not getting compensated enough for the money they are creating for others. While it's not "slavery" (as a friend who played football for a major Pac 10 team told me once), it's not fair, either.

The player who was majoring in molecular genetics was, I believe, Krenzel of the Buckeyes. The players on these teams run the gamut from guys like that to players who skirt normal admissions requirements because they are marginal students at best.

I will never hear the end of it at work...

3 of the doctors are OSU grads. Sigh...

I'm just glad Purdue also won its bowl game. Hell, I was amazed that they got a bowl invitation with a 6-6 record. But I was happy to see the Big 10 win. And I agree with Bella...I'm just happy no riots were started.

damn Buckeyes!!!! the Hurricanes were robbed. that was a LATE call by the ref. the ref who was right in front of the play waved his arms incomplete. then another official comes in and declares pass interference. the call itself was "iffy". that was a cold-blooded thing to do to decide a championship. call it right then and there. dont wait for the Hurricanes to celebrate then toss it. BAD decision.

i am not a Hurricane fan, but i have a friend at work who loves the Buckeyes and for YEARS we all laughed at him because the Buckeyes were never going to beat Michigan, let alone win a national title. DAMN!!!!! oh well, that's why there is never a sure thing in sports!!

Coming out of the closet (so to speak)

I never mentioned this before, but I am probably the only member of TMF who is a graduate of the University of Miami. And no, I'm not a thug...nor have I ever done jail time. (That's more than Warren Sapp can say, plus he never graduated). Anyway, I stand by my assertion that the game should have been over at the end of the first overtime...😡 😡 😡 :sowrong: :sowrong: :sowrong:

Miami are National Champs in my book... they trust a ref with bottlecap goggles on to make the call... what a joke... the officiating stinks in both the NCAA and NFL...

Both OSU and Miami are winners, but only one team can be champs. The refs messed up, but it's over now. Hey, at least it wasn't a Super Bowl game. 😀

Ya GO Buckeyes!! im a Oregon Duck fan myself but im happy still that ohio won because i so did not want Miami to win.
