This month we visit my favorite Texas city. In the 1600s the Spanish were exploring what would become Texas. On June 13 1691 an exploration party established a small settlement, naming it San Antonio de Padus.

Today the city is home to 1.3 million residents, making it the third largest city in the state. San Antonio features many museums, a world-class zoo and other attractions. Fort Sam Houston, the second oldest active military base in Texas is home to Brooke Army Medical Center. This hospital is home to one of the best burn units in the world and civilians with severe burns are often treated there.

No trip to San Antonio is complete without a visit to Mission San Antonio de Valero, better known as the Alamo, one of the five missions that can be seen on the Mission Trail.

This is the Chapel. As the Mexican Army breached the walls many of the last defenders retreated here, where the last of the fighting took place.

The Long Barrack. Some of the heaviest fighting occured in and around this building on March 6.

In 1805 the commander of the compound established the first known hospital in Texas. This millstone and baptismal font were used at the Alamo.

A few blocks west of the Alamo is San Fernando Cathedral. Some believe the remains of some of the Alamo defenders rest here.

A block west of the church, behind City Hall, is the Spanish Governor's Palace. The online exibits page is down right now.

Mils, San Antonio is a wonderful city to visit. And if you love Victorian era architecture as much as I do The King William District is a must see.
