This building, next to the Visitor Center, houses a small museum with furniture and machines from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

This is the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm. To pass through this gate is to step back in time and see a Hill Country farm as it would have been circa 1915.

Johann and Christine Sauer settled here in 1869, with their four children. As the farm prospered they added more buildings and eventually had 10 children. One of them, Auguata Sauer Linding, was a midwife at the birth of LBJ.

The Beckmann family bought the land in 1900. A bumper cotton crop several years later allowed them to build a larger, modern (at the time) house and a new barn.

Thanks my Goddess, I love sharing this stuff. I was there yesterday, and more pictures are coming up. Learning about the past and how people went about their daily lives is an endless source of fascination to me. The furnishing in those homes is beautiful, isn't it? :blowkiss:

Very interesting glimpse of an earlier era. Thanks for sharing all the photos, Bugman. 😀

In post number 7, the middle picture is the room I like the most. The hardwood floors....the chair rail, the lamp, and the wallpaper....this is the one I like the best.

Antiques are lovely when they are kept in this condition. It is interesting to see the differences between one period and another. :blowkiss:

Thanks Mils. Some more recent history that you and I remember is coming soon.

I am dissapointed that picture didn't come out better. I can imagine sitting in that room while a family member or friend played a violin, mandolin or some other instrument, or the latest news of the day was discussed.

In the next two posts, a tour of the barn and yard.

Thanks for another Texas tour Bugman. I'll always remember LBJ as the president who oversaw NASA's greatest moments.

Glad you've enjoyed it. A glitch of some sort is keeping me from posting more pictures right now, but when that's fixed there is more to come so check back over the next few days. Yes, that was the Golden Age of NASA.

Leaving the State Park and turning right onto County Road 1, we travel along the south bank of the Pedernales River.

A left turn on Park Road 52 leads to the entrance to the LBJ Ranch, operated by the National Park Service. Just outside the entrance stands this one room school, which LBJ attended as a boy. It is possible he sat at one of these very desks.

Samuel E. and Elisa Johnson, paternal grandparents of the future president, lived out the last years of their lives in this modest home.

Following the looping road around the 6,000 foot airstrip you come to the Show Barn. LBJ had an affinity for the Hereford breed. When he and Lady Bird donated some of their land to the NPS in 1970, Johnson insisted it remain a working ranch. Today, many of the cattle are decended from his breeding stock. This is LBJ Onward, who tips the scales at 875 pounds. There are also some private homes on the property who run small herds, and you must yield to crossing livestock. I passed within three or four feet of a large bull standing on the roadside.

The Texas White House. The family loved the ranch, and came here often to escape the pressure cooker of Washington. LBJ spent 26 months of his term here. Many world leaders, famous entertainers and other noteable figures of the day either visited or stayed a few days at the home. On November 22 1963, JFK and Jackie were scheduled to fly from Dallas and spend the night here.

A guided tour of the first floor is offered for a modest $2 fee. Walking through the rooms is like walking back through the pages of history. If only those walls could talk...In the second picture the one story room on the far left served as the Oval Office when Johnson was here. The massive oak tree (estimated to be 500 years old) is known as the Cabinet Oak. LBJ often met with his cabinet heads or the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the shade of this tree.

After Air Force One landed at Bergstrom AFB in Austin the president would board this Lockheed Jetstar for the last leg of his trip. The other two pictures were the planes hanger. This plane carried many VIPs to and from the ranch.

This small house was used by the Secret Service. The military operated a communications center from these buildings. This 1965 Corvette was owned by daughter Luci. The presidential pool. That small porch covers a door leading to and from his bedroom.

LBJ and Lady Bird rest here, in the family cemetery, surrounded by his ancestors. I hope some of you have found this thread intresting. This series is something I've enjoyed doing, and something new is coming next month.
