This month we return to San Antonio where we'll visit HemisFair '68, the first World's Fair in the Southwest. Constructed to host the fair, it was built at a cost of $156 million dollars and sits on 96.2 acres just blocks from downtown. It was funded with a combination of city state and federal funds and bond sales. It lost millions of dollars.

There are a number of waterfalls in the park. Some of them have been shut off to conserve water.

These wonderful old homes are in rough shape and not open to the public. The last picture is the Halff House. Mayer Halff and his brother Solomon were prominent San Antonio businessmen. At one time they owned over one million acres of ranchland.

Very interesting photos, Bugman. Thanks for this whole series. 😀

More pictures of the grounds. Using native labor, the Spanish built this aquaduct around 1718.

More pictures of the grounds. This is a statue of Fransisco I. Madero. A leader of the Mexican Revolution, he was exiled to Texas for years.

nice man sad they let those houses sit tho

The Tower of the Americas. When it opened in 1968 it was one of the tallest structures west of the Mississippi and is still the tallest building in San Antonio. The tower is home to a gift shop, a cafe and a high scale restaurant, the Chart House. At the top of the tower (well over 600 feet) are two observation decks offering wonderful views of San Antonio. The pictures in the next two posts were taken from the open air deck.

Yes it is. I stood there thinking about them being restored and filled with period pieces or at least reproductions.

ya that would be so awesome i love antiques and vintage items..love the aerial shots as well

At least they are still standing so there is always hope they might be restored to their former beauty.

Thanks for the memories.

World's Fairs have lost their appeal over the years, however I have attended The World's Fair in New York City in the 60's, along with The World's Fair in Knoxville,Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana.
