In 1894 - 95 the city erected dozens of Moonlight Towers to light the streets. Standing 165 feet high, they first used carbon-arc lamps. They were converted to incandescent lamps in 1925 and to mercury-vapor lamps in 1936.
Today seventeen towers remain in some of the older neighborhoods near downtown and are still used, although this is more for the nostalgic effect. The towers were long ago surpassed by modern street lights. In 1976 the towers were added to The National Register of Historic Places.
