The 28-page report, prepared by Los Angeles County Probation Department at the request of the judge who presided over her shoplifting trial, was taken from a locked file cabinet at the Santa Monica courthouse, the syndicated TV program said.
According to the show, the Santa Monica Police Department is investigating the incident as a burglary, and a law enforcement source told producers authorities believe the file may have been stolen as "an inside job" to be sold to the tabloids.
Sources cited by the show say keys to the file cabinet had been left in an unlocked desk drawer and that when the courthouse clerk noticed the report missing Thursday afternoon, she immediately contacted police.
The file, called a "pre-conviction report," contains detailed information about Ryder's background, including financial status, medical history and recommendations from the Probation Department, according to the TV program.
Judge Elden Fox reportedly ordered the file created months ago in the event Ryder was convicted.
A jury in Beverly Hills on Wednesday found Ryder guilty of grand theft and vandalism for shoplifting some $5,500 worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue store last December.
The 31-year-old actress, a two-time Oscar nominee, faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison when she is sentenced Dec. 6.
There was no immediate comment from the Santa Monica police or Ryder's attorney. A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office said she was not aware the file was missing, and probation officials could not be reached.
"Celebrity Justice" is produced by Time Telepictures Television West Coast Productions, the AOL Time Warner Inc. unit behind the syndicated TV show "Extra."
