There were three explorers, hiking through what is now known as Canada.

"You know," said one of the explorers, "we should name this place we're hiking through."

"I know," said the second explorer. "We'll each pick a letter and then make a name out of that."

"Okay," said the third, "I'll go first. C, eh."

"N, eh."

"D, eh." And that's how Canada was named...

This post is funny, eh? Not that Canada isn't a great country, eh? Do Canadians really say "eh" all the time, eh? I'm not Canadian, so I don't know, eh? :blaugh:

There's a nice pun on 'Canada' in Austria: 'Kahna da' translates as 'Nobody there'. It's rather thinly populated, isn't it? 😛

A similar pun exists on 'dollar' (the bar sayings thread triggered that memory): If somebody is asked whether he still has some money left, he replies 'Dollar und Dollar' and turns out his pockets. Translated as 'here empty, and there empty'... 😀

Eh?

Yes, they DO say "eh" in Canada - in Ontario, anyway. Crime novelist Elmore Leonard, who has a real talent for dialog, included it in characterization in his novel "Killshot". It showed up in the "McKenzie Brothers" act on SCTV about 20 yrs ago in very exaggerated form, and even in the newspaper comic "For Better or For Worse".

I don't remember that from History class. Course, I don't remember a lot of stuff from any class.
What colour is the White House again?

Cheers.

Sorry Jim, i was busy building a new igloo 😉 Seriousely though, Canadians, or atleast the ones i've come in contact with, do say Eh, although some say it less then others. Basically it's the american equivilant to "huh?"
Actually i have a shirt somewhere with all the deffinitions of "Eh". If i can find it i'll have to write it down 😉

Thanks, Cosmo, huh?

So Canadians do say eh, huh? Yes, we Americans do say huh a lot, huh? I don't say it that much, huh? Only when I'm trying to be funny, huh? I think I like saying eh more, huh? :bouncybou

So what do the English say, apart from "What-ho!" and "spiffing old chap!"?

If they're like you, Jim, they say, "Tickle 'er feet, mate!" 😀

LOL There are quite a few like me and most of them are on the books now. Sadly, not the majority though. Hey-ho. 🙄
