Chat, old or new...

...I've never been able to get into it.

I cannot be authorised, according to the error message.
tried re-logging in as suggested and also tried various browsers.

I have not tried the new chat myself but it is flash based not java base like the old one. So you might want to see if your flash player is new or current and if its not updating might help you get into the new room.

The old room is java based so you might want to verify your installition see if its ok.

With the old room there were I think a few problems with the latest java update. Not sure if thats still true. You also might want to check your firewall make sure it allows a wjview.exe to communicate. wjview is the windows virtual machine used for java. I had trouble getting in for awhile when I got a new firewall and needed to allow the program to communicate with the web to get in the old room.

Sorry my friend. I hoped that would fix the problem.

hmmmmmmmm the old chat does take up quite a bit of memory so if you have lots of apps running that may be a problem depending on how much memory your system has.

The new room is easier in that sense. It takes up less resources I think.

I've looked at everything, flash settings, firewall-turned it off also.
I've concidered the OS also.

The other thing is that half of my posts aren't posting. Not the 60 seond rule. They're posted and then there just not there. Connection, perhaps?

Could be connection. Could be a corrupted IE. Do the posts in the main forum do the same thing in FireFox or Opera.

What OS do you have?

Running Vista. The same result happens with all browsers.
Though, thinking about it, couldn't get in when running XP on old laptop either.

It just seems to be a matter of authorisation, oh well

If the posts are disappearing on all browsers I wonder if its something simple like a bad cookie.

As for the chat with Vista it could be too new a version of Java. Not sure which are good or bad these days I use Version 5 update 12 and have no problems. Course I am using Windows XP SP1 (old I know 😛)

The old chatroom is something of a pain. You have to have just the right version of Java to get it to work. Sometimes the latest version is right; sometimes not.

Tell me, what do you see when you try to log in to the new chatroom? Do you know how to take a screen shot? If not, take a look at this Microsoft page to learn how. See if you can get a screen shot of the error message.

With the old Chat it is Java but you cann not run it on the lastest and greatest. It runs better on 6 ver3. As for the new one, Being flash based.. updated your flash files at www.adobe.com and then try to long in from withing the TMF forum itself. I get the same thing as you from the outside.. but from within the forum.. works good. Hope this helps

Hmm. That's not an incognito window in Chrome, is it? (I don't think so) If you don't allow cookies you won't be allowed in. Are you behind any kind of proxy service? If you are at a university you might be without knowing it. This system relies on you having the same IP address when you browse the TMF and log into the chatroom and, if you're behind a proxy that does not do this, you won't be able to get in.

I get the same message in all browsers. There are no proxy settings that I can see, and I've tried turning the firewall off, updating, downdating (new word!)... however, and thinking about it, this may be the issue... My broadband access is either through a pen modem or through my mobile, which is considerably cheaper, virtually free!

I have no problems on facebook chat though. I don't use any others.

Ah, understood. The fact that you connect through a cellular network could explain it, although it would be odd. Tell me, are you able to try to connect through a more traditional, fixed connection such as a cable/DSL line or a fixed university/corporate network? It will be hard to tell if it really is the cellular network. If not, I can try disabling one safeguard to see if it makes a difference.

well, I've no other access for the moment, and this one is the cheapest. It's a T-Mobile network so, technically, it IS a mobile phone.

It doesn't seem to be an issue with other chat, though I hardly use them

It probably wouldn't be, depending on the authentication scheme the other rooms use. I have a two-tiered system in place that is catching you somewhere. I'll have to try and disable one of them when I know you'll be on to test it.

I'll try to turn it off and just leave it off for a while; then you'll be able to try it at your leisure. Unfortunately, I need to look hard at what I wrote to make certain I don't break anything when I do this, something I don't have much time for at the moment.
