Google Chrome/Chromium no longer supports Java natively. The workaround is to either use Firefox (or IE or Safari), or add the IE Tab extension to Chrome, as described here:

Some notes on using Java with Firefox, adapted from DSL Reports:

To use Java, you need the 32-bit version of Firefox.

If you wish to continue to use Java, you should use the 52 ESR branch where Java & other Plugins will persist until 52 ESR goes end-of-life, about 1 year from now.

ESR feature set should remain as it is, but it will continue to receive security updates.
